Objectives

The objectives are organized using the logical prerequisite strategy; the information will
be presented as a step-by-step procedure that mimics the exact procedure the learner
will eventually execute on their own.
Upon completion of the face-to-face training learners will be able to:
1. Log in to Rcopia with their credentials
2. Locate existing patients in Rcopia system and add new patients to the system
3. Correctly identify and input desired drugs name, strength, intended dose, and
directions for use
4. Correctly input the quantity and number of refills of the drug the patient has been
authorized for
5. Verify that the medication being prescribed is not dangerous to take with other
medications the patient is taking
6. Verify that the patient the drug is being prescribed for has not reported an allergy
to the specific medication, or the class of drugs it may fall into
7. Send the prescription to the patients requested pharmacy

Instructional Strategies
Pre-Instructional Strategy: A short video showcasing the main features of Rcopia will
be shown to orient the learners; hopefully it will excite and motivate the learners to
begin the training. Learners will be given an opportunity at the end of the video to ask
questions, but will be informed that the video was just to give them an idea of what they
are about to learn and they should not be nervous if they do not know how to do
anything the video showed.
Note: The instructor will show all steps to be taught in this training on her computer
projected onto a screen all of the learners can see.
Objective 1: Learner will be able to log in to Rcopia with their credentials
Initial Presentation: The Instructor will have her computer screen projected onto
a projector that all of the learners can see while they are on their individual
computers/laptops. The instructor will demonstrate how to open the program and
log in. The instructor will verbally tell the learners what she is doing as she does
it for them to see on the projector screen.
Generative Strategy: Each learner will physically log in as shown by the
instructor. The instructor will make sure each learner is successful with the task
and answer any questions learners may have before moving on to the next step.
Objective 2: Learner will be able to locate existing patients in Rcopia system and add
new patients to the system

Initial Presentation: The instructor will demonstrate on her computer how to

search for an existing patient and add a new patient to the Rcopia system. The
instructor will prompt the learners to complete the action a few times until they
feel comfortable with the task; she will not move on to the next part of the
instruction until all of the learners state they are ready to move on when asked.
Generative Strategy: Each learner will physically locate a patient that is in the
system as well as add a new patient into the system. Learners will be
encouraged to ask questions to the instructor as well as to each other.
Objective 3: Learner will be able to correctly identify and input desired drugs name,
strength, intended dose, and directions for use
Initial Presentation: The instructor will demonstrate on her computer how to
identify and input desired drugs name, strength, intended dose, and directions
for use. The instructor will prompt the learners to complete the action a few times
until they feel comfortable with the task; she will not move on to the next part of
the instruction until all of the learners state they are ready to move on when
asked. Students will be encouraged to ask any and all questions, reminding them
that there are no stupid questions!
Generative Strategy: Each learner will physically follow along with the instructor
on their own computer and input the provided drugs name, strength, intended
dose, and directions for use. Learners will then be prompted by the instructor to
go through the process again on their own until they feel comfortable.

Objective 4: Learner will be able to correctly input the quantity and number of refills of
the drug the patient has been authorized for
Initial Presentation: The instructor will demonstrate on her computer how to
input the quantity of the drug to be dispensed, as well as the number of refills the
patient has been authorized for. The instructor will prompt the learners to
complete the action a few times until they feel comfortable with the task; she will
not move on to the next part of the instruction until all of the learners state they
are ready to move on when asked. Students will be encouraged to ask any and
all questions, reminding them that there are no stupid questions!
Generative Strategy: Each learner will physically follow along with the instructor
on their own computer and input the quantity of the drug to be dispensed, and
the number of refills the patient has been authorized for. Learners will then be
prompted by the instructor to go through the process again on their own until they
feel comfortable.
Objective 5: Learner will be able to verify that the medication being prescribed is not
dangerous to take with other medications the patient is taking
Objective 6: Learner will be able to verify that the patient the drug is being prescribed
for has not reported an allergy to the specific medication, or the class of drugs it may fall
into
Initial Presentation: The instructor will show the learners a screenshot example
of a patient that is being prescribed a medication that is dangerous for him/her to
take; reasons the drug may be dangerous include: allergies to the drug itself,

allergies to the class of drug the prescribed drug falls into, and/or it is known to
have adverse interactions with a drug the patient is currently taking. The
instructor will point out the red triangle symbol that appears when this situation
arises in the Rcopia system and emphasize that this means STOP. The
instructor will prompt a discussion about what to do in this case; the protocol will
require immediately terminating to fill the prescription and communicating with
the prescribing physician about how to proceed. Every physicians office runs
differently, and as such the members of the office will discuss the exact
procedure to follow in this situation.
Generative Strategy: Learners will be made aware of the symbol that appears
when a drug is dangerous for the patient to be prescribed. They will discuss with
their coworkers the best way to handle these situations in their particular office
setting.
Objective 7: Learner will be able to send the prescription to the patients requested
pharmacy
Initial Presentation: The instructor will demonstrate on her computer how to
locate pharmacies in the Rcopia database; search tactics that work well in
Rcopia will be covered. The instructor will demonstrate how to add a pharmacy to
the Rcopia database if it is not already in the system. The instructor will show
where the Prescribe button is located on the screen and inform the learners this
is where they click to send the prescription to the queue for the physician to
review when, AND ONLY WHEN, the prescription is ready to be filled.
Generative Strategy: Each learner will physically follow along with the instructor

on their own computer to locate a desired pharmacy, and add a new pharmacy to
the system. Learners will then be prompted by the instructor to go through the
process again on their own until they feel comfortable.

At this point in the training the learners will be given a short break and the instructor will
walk around and interact with the learners. Some learners feel more comfortable asking
questions privately and the instructor will be available to do so. The group will the
brought back together and any additional questions will be answered.
Initial Presentation: Using application performance strategy as a learning and
evaluation method, the instructor will hand out five prescriptions to each learner
for them to enter into Rcopia. This will be an individual activity and the learners
will be instructed to only ask questions to the instructor. When a learner
successfully sends all five prescriptions to the physicians queue he/she will have
successfully completed this training.
The prescriptions will contain the following scenarios:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Drug info: Correct

Generative Strategy: Each learner will individually input the five provided
prescriptions and in doing so will demonstrate their proficiency using Rcopia.

Additional Instructional Strategies

It is important for the prescribing physician be able to meet all of the
aforementioned objectives; there may be times he/she has to send a prescription to the
pharmacy from start to finish without staff assistance. In addition to the previous
instruction the physician will need to be trained on how to authorize prescriptions to be
sent to the pharmacy from the Physicians Que. This instruction is only for the
physician(s).
Initial Presentation: The instructor will demonstrate how to navigate to the
Physicians Que in Rcopia. She will show how to open a pending prescription
and remind the doctor that it is his/her responsibility to make sure all the
information is correct before sending it to the pharmacy. The instructor will show
the physician where to enter his/her password and where to click to send the
prescription to the pharmacy. The instructor will add some prescriptions to the
Physicians Que for physician to work with for the exercise.
Generative Strategy: The physician will then show the instructor on his/her own
computer that he/she can log in, access the Physicians Que, and submit the
desired prescription.

To conclude the training, the instructors will show the learners how to locate the help
features on the Rcopia website as well as the ones built into the program. The
instructors will leave their contact information, and encourage the learners to contact
them in the future if they run into difficulty using Rcopia.
