Symphonic Band
Materials: Instruments, I Recommend, Cumberland Cross
National Standards
2. Playing instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of
music.
Objectives
1. Students will play all notes with a good tone, using proper
breathing and breath support.
2. Students will subdivide, count, and keep a steady beat to help
play complicated rhythms.
3. Students will play with proper phrasing by singing the phrase to
hear high and low points and appropriate places to breathe.
Procedure

P. 7 #2, play scale with good tone and connected sound
Cumberland Cross
Slow section
o Clarinets- what direction do you have this line to have?
Sing the phrase, see where the natural breath is,
high and low points, make sure no one is sticking out
Second clarinet, bring part out each time you have a
half note followed by a quarter note
o Flute, oboe, clarinet
Same procedure
o Saxes add in
Fast section
o Breath down rhythm so its clean
o Check articulations- light and bouncy, but not clipped
2/4 measure followed by 4/4measure
o Work on pick up note
o Dont slow down in the measure, push down the hill
Create a sense of movement throughout the entire piece- how do
we do this? What sort of pictures do we want in our head?
Assessment: Assessment during this lesson will be formative and
informal. The teacher will listen and evaluate students on the progress
made in the objectives listed below.
Future Lessons: Future lessons with this group will continue to work
on developing a good tone, playing with proper posture and hand
position, and playing correct notes and rhythms.
