Paying College Athletes
OUTLINE YOUR OWN PERSONAL CONTEXT:
Although there were many research topics that I could have chosen, but I chose this

Comment [MW1]: This is a debatable topic that has been a

big dicusiion throughout college sports for many year now.
This being said there is a lot of information from both point
of views.

research topic because it pertains to my everyday life in college and it is an interesting topic to
research. Both sides of the argument bring up solid and informational points, and it intrigued me
to learn where both sides come from while I was researching. My sister is a college athlete at Saint
Josephs University, so I was interested in researching this topic because of her. I wanted to see if
it would be right or not to pay a college athlete like my sister. I think Im qualified to write about
this research topic because I have a lot of knowledge in the sports industry and my major that I am
pursing is sport and entertainment management. Also, Im surrounded by student athletes everyday
which helped me with my research. Before researching this topic, I felt that student athletes

Comment [MW2]: Tell us how more specifically this helped

shouldnt be paid because they are considered students. The research however changed my mind
on the topic and I now think that they should be paid. In conclusion, I chose this research topic
because it pertains to the sports world, my major, and it was a very interesting topic to do research
on.

Sanderson, Allen R. "The Case for Paying College Athletes." JSTOR [JSTOR]. N.p., n.d. Web.
1. I chose this article because it was very reliable and came from the recommended database
for our school. The central idea for this article was defending the student athletes and
giving reasons why the NCAA is so profitable from the athletes.

Comment [MW3]: Great credible source from jstor. An

interesting topic that you could evaluate is how some
athletes need to make money in college bc they are
forfeting themselves from entering the workforce.

2. The major values and interests of this article is that the NCAA is making more and more
revenue each year, benefiting from the student athletes, while the student athletes receive
no compensation in return besides a full scholarship. It also gives three informational
reasons why they should be paid by the NCAA and the universities.
3. Allen R Sanderson is a professor at the University of Chicago and is in the sports and
economics department of the school, so he is very knowledgeable in the world of sports
along with money and economics. He was more biased than unbiased in this article
because he explained why college athletes should be paid.

"So You Want To Be A Millionaire While You Go To College?" JSTOR [JSTOR]. N.p., n.d.
Web.
1. I chose this article mainly because it talked about the economics side of paying college
athletes more than the moral side. The central idea was also defending paying college
athletes and gave many quotes from other people saying how college athletes should be
paid.
2. The major values and interests of this article is that these athletes are risking their careers

Comment [MW4]: Another example you could use

supporting paying college athletes could be the level of
success that athletes have in the work force post college

by staying in school and getting an education. They are risking injury by providing
revenue for the school in which they dont get anything in return for.
3. This author was very reliable and gave many logical and informational opinions on this

Comment [MW5]: Talk about the effects of concussions and

how that can prohibit them from living longer lives and
need medical attention later on down the road.

topic. He served to be a pretty biased author, mainly talking about the benefits of paying
college athletes rather than not paying them.

Sanderson, Allen R. Enough Madness: Just Pay College Athletes. Chicagotribune.com. N.p.,
n.d. Wed. 02 Feb. 2016

Comment [MW6]: It would be interesting to use a source

that counters your argument to see the other sides point of
view. This would also make your argument more credible by
evaluating both sides.

1. I chose this article because it had a one sided view toward my argument. The central idea
was similar to the other sources I used, and that was to pay college athletes and all the
controversy surrounding this topic would be over. It provided statistics and graphs to
support my argument also.
2. The major values and interests of this article is that the NCAA is benefiting from the
students and arent doing anything to repay the athletes. The author makes the NCAA
seem like the bad guys and persuaded me to thinking that college athletes should be paid.
3. The author was the same author as I used in my other source, so he was very reliable. He
is in the field of sports and economics, which is a perfect combination to have when
doing research on paying college athletes.

REFLECTION
This research topic is arguable because both sides of this argument have good points to make.
One can find good research on both sides of the argument and still be able to create a solid
research paper. From the sources I found, they all seemed to agree on the same central idea,
which was the unfair benefit the NCAA is making from college athletes that get nothing in
return. I noticed that from some of the sources, they actually persuaded me to one side and got
me on the college athletes side and how they should be paid. I might need to revise my question
to make it more specific, but the question I have now I was able to get a lot of research on.
