Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: 3 minutes

(Put Chocolate Chip Recipe on the slide)

Who likes to each chocolate chip cookies? (wait for answers) I know I do! I love them. What is better than homemade
chocolate chip cookies? Not much.
What is this thing Ive put on the board? (wait for answers). Yes its a recipe. What stands out to you about this recipe?
(wait for answers) Yeah, there are ingredients at the top and instructions at the bottom.
So lets say we bought all of the need ingredients for our cookies and we have pulled out a recipe for the cookies. Now
what do we have to do? (wait for answers) Yes, we have to be able to read the recipe. Then once we do that we have to be
able to measure out the right amount of ingredients. Why do you think we have to do that? (wait for answers) Exactly we
dont want our cookies to come out to flat or grainy or anything but perfect.
In order for us to make the perfect cookies or any kind of recipe, we have to know how to measure out our ingredients.
Learning activities/procedures:

Allotted time: 37 minutes

To start off we have to know some abbreviations we might come across in a recipe. Im sure you know some of these
from cooking at home or math class. Lets go through each one that is on your worksheet. Does anyone know what tsp.
stands for? (wait on answer) Correct a teaspoon. (Go through each one the same way tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint,
quart, pound, ounce, Liter, milliliter, gram).
Now that we know some basic abbreviations we may come across when we are reading our recipe. We have to know
how much to put into each recipe. For example what if the recipe calls for cup, but we only have a tablespoon. We have
to know how many of the those tablespoons we would need to make that cup. Right?
So here are some basic measurements: (Go through each one)
3 tsp = 1 Tbsp
2 Tbsp = 1 fl oz
4 Tbsp = cup
8 fl oz = 1 cup
16 Tbsp = 1 cup
2 c = 1 pint
4 c = 2 pt = 1 qt
4 qt = 1 gallon
16 oz = 1 lb
Here is a trick I learned to keep a few of these straight. You may have seen this trick before. It helps me out when Im
cooking. As I write this down, why dont you copy it down on the right side of your measurement sheet to help you
remember? (Write on the board the Royal Family of Measurement) Its silly, but it helps me remember. There is King
Gallon, He had 4 Queens, Each Queen had 2 Princesses, Each Princess had 2 cats. Those stand for Gallon, Quarts, Pints,
and Cups. In every gallon there is 4 quarts, in every quart there is two pints, in every pint there is two cats. It may be silly,
but I still use it to help me remember.
Now that we have a grasp on basic abbreviations and measurements lets go through some examples as a class, then you
can complete the worksheet on your own.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon? (wait for answers) 3 tsp. How did you come to that answer?
If the recipe calls for cup, how many tablespoons would it take? (wait for answers) 8 Tbsp. How did you come to that
answer?
How many quarts are in 3 gallons? (wait for answers) 12 qt. How did you come to that answer?
What is the abbreviation for fluid ounce? (wait for answers) fl. oz.
How many fluid ounces are in 2 cups of water? (wait for answers) 16 fl. oz. How did you come to that answer?
If a recipe calls for a quart of water, how many cups would it take? (wait for answers) 4 c. How did you come to that
answer?
What is the abbreviation for milliliter? (wait for answers) ml.
How many quarts are in of a gallon? (wait for answers) 1 qt.
How many tablespoons are in 4 fluid ounces of milk? (wait for answers) 8 Tbsp. How did you come to that answer?
How many cups are in 3 pints? (wait for answers) 6 c. How did you come to that answer?
Now lets work on your worksheets for 10 minutes. When we are done we will go through the worksheet to see how you
did. You may work with a partner.
(Let students work on the worksheet)

Closure/Review of Content:

Allotted time: 8 minutes

Lets go through your worksheet (go through the worksheet and ask students how they came to those particular answers.
Have them show their work on the board if required.
You all did a wonderful job! Now that we know our abbreviations and how to find measurement equivalents, we are one
step closer to being able to cook a recipe!
Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Allotted time: N/A

My assessment will be informal and formal. My informal assessment will be the completion of the notes worksheet and
class participation in discussion of different measurements. The formal assessment will be taken from their completion of
the measurement worksheet.

Modifications for exceptional learners:

For this lesson some students may have trouble keeping up with the notes worksheet either because of special needs or
ESL, so I could print off completed worksheets to give to them after the lesson to fill in any gaps they may have had in
their notes.
In this particular classroom I have two special needs students. I will make sure they stay on task and seat them next to
high achieving learners. These high achieving learners will be able to help the two students that may need some extra
assistance in taking notes or completing their worksheet.
