When I am baptized I make a covenant with God.

What you will need:

Door- you can make this with poster board.
5 Locks- I would find a picture and print it out, and then attach to the door.
5 Keys- these will be used to unlock your locks. These will have the baptismal covenants written on them.
Picture of Heavenly Father
To Begin Your Sharing Time:
Explain to the children what a covenant is. I really like the idea that is given in the Primary Outline: invite two
children to the front of the room. Have the first child say, “I promise to (lend you my toy) if you will promise to
(return it). Have the second child agree and link arms with the first child. Explain a little more what a covenant
is.
Next, explain to the children that when we are baptized we make covenants/promises to our Heavenly Father.
And if we keep these promises he in return has a promise for us. Then show the children your door with the 5
locks. Tell the children that we can find out what our Heavenly Father promises us by unlocking this door. But I
have lost the keys and they are somewhere in the primary room. The keys are special keys…on each of the 5
keys are the covenants that we make with our Heavenly Father, and these are the keys that will unlock the locks
on the door.
Choose a child to go and find a key. Have them bring the key back up to the front. Read aloud what promise is
on the key. Have the child attach the key to the lock (just tape it to the lock). Then explain what the covenant
means. Continue this until all the keys have been found.
After all the keys have been found go over each of the covenants that we make when we are baptized. Then tell
them that they have unlocked all the locks… ‘Are you ready to find out Heavenly Father’s Promise?’ Open the
door to reveal the picture of Heavenly Father. Then discuss what our Heavenly Father promises us if we keep
our promises.
Here are some websites that have Key clip art:
www.mormonshare.com
http://clipart.peirceinternet.com/objects.html
http://www.clker.com/clipart-3770.html

Promises for each key:

We Promise… **For Sr. Primary you could have a
- to obey the commandments scripture reference on the key. They
- to stand as a witness of God will need to look up the scripture and
- to love and help others then figure out what the covenant is.
- to pay tithing
- to attend Primary and Sacrament meeting

Heavenly Father promises…

- To let me live with him forever!
- to love and bless me
- to answer my prayers
- to forgive me when I repent
- to give me the gift of the Holy Ghost

Close by testifying of the importance of our baptismal covenants.

Another idea:
This idea is really just like the idea that is given in the Primary Outline, but I have changed a few things:
Begin the sharing time the same as above…using the idea from the Primary Outline. For the covenant game:
Prepare in advance separate pieces of paper with the following promises:
To obey the commandments
To stand as a witness of God
To love and help others,
To pay tithing,
To attend Primary and Sacrament meeting
To forgive me when I repent
To love and bless me
To give me the gift of the Holy Ghost
To answer my prayers
To let me live with Him forever.
-You could post the promise strips all around the Primary Room or in a bucket.
-(For Senior Primary you could type up the promises. Then cut each on into strips and place the strips into an
envelope. Split the children into groups and give each group an envelope. Tell them that inside the envelope is a
promise, but it’s in pieces. They will have to work as a team and put the words in order.)

On a chalkboard or bulletin board, post a picture of Heavenly Father with the phrase ‘Heavenly Father
Promises’ below the picture. Also post a picture of children with the phrase ‘I Promise’ below the picture.
Have the children post the promises underneath the picture it goes with. Then discuss that promise/covenant
with the children.

An object lesson idea:

I used this last year, but I didn’t write down where I found it. I’m pretty sure I found it on Sugardoodle, but I’m
not 100% sure. If anyone knows where this can be found please let me know.
This is a really cute object lesson that you could close your Sharing Time with:

Baptism Object Lesson

As well as doing Family Home Evening on this, we also asked our home teacher to give his lessons on baptism.
One of the ones that he did was:
He gave my son three jelly beans to hold, and explained that each of those was a promise that he made to God,
and that by giving God those three things, he would get something better in return. We looked up the sacrament
prayer to find the three covenants. For giving the three jellybeans back, he got a chocolate bar, which
represented the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Of course, my son does not have the required delayed gratification skills, and very poor impulse control, so he
ate the jellybeans before the Home Teacher got to the chocolate bar part! Still, it was a good object lesson
