Inquiry: What are the benefits of becoming educated on renewable energy?
Thesis: As threats of dwindling resources intensify, renewable energy is becoming increasingly
important in the worlds workforce, economy, and overall survival, which is why inhabitants of it
should become more aware of the issue at hand.

Solar Energy Adoption In Miami-Dade County, Florida." Southeastern Geographer 54.1
(2014): 18-35. Academic Search Complete. Web. 29 Feb. 2016.
The two authors of this work, Jeffrey Onsted and Aileen Arela-Margolles, discuss the
state of Floridas incentive program to encourage more eco-friendly lifestyles. Their specific
example is about how these incentive programs affect citizens of Miami-Dade County, located in
southern Florida. After conducting a survey and reviewing its results, the authors concluded that
legislators and companies should try to better publicize not only the environmental benefits of
alternative energy, but also the benefits of the available incentive programs (Arela-Margolles and
Onsted). The authors explain that A great deal of opportunity, as well as constraint, for the
dispersal and adoption of renewable energy lies in everyday behavior of citizens, including their
energy awareness, choices, attitudes, and demands (qtd. in Arela-Margolles and Onsted). This
would suitably fit into my research because it could be used as an example of how better
publicizing of renewable energy can increase the average households usage of it.

Two Turkish professors in the Department of Elementary Science Education at Ondokuz
Mays University conducted a study on 433 high school students that assessed their attitudes
toward alternative energy sources. elikler and Askan consider the younger generations to be
very important to the innovation of alternative energy, and explain:
Nowadays, many countries allocate considerable sums from their budgets to research that
seek to resolve environmental problems and to leave a livable environment for future
generations. However, a far simpler approach against environmental problems would
involve raising individuals with greater environmental awareness. In order to raise
individuals who are environmentally aware, and who contribute to the well-being of their
societies with their novel and innovative ideas, measures should be taken to provide
education regarding the sources of environmental pollution and to instill positive attitudes
towards the environment.
The two researchers performed the study wanting to get a general idea of how motivated they
are to make changes and become environmentally conscious. The authors discuss their findings
and explain how their study can be repeated. I would use this source as evidence that shows why
younger generations should be knowledgeable about renewable energy.

In The Green Economy: A Case For Technical Literacy." Duke Forum For Law & Social
Change (DFLSC) 4. (2012): 23-44. Academic Search Alumni Edition. Web. 29 Feb. 2016.
The authors of this piece, Kate Gordon, Louis Soares, and Stephen Steigleder, express
exigency in particular about the American workforce. The three explain the main topic of the
paper by saying In this paper, we discuss the current successes and future opportunities that go
along with the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy economy (Gordon, Soares, and
Steigleder 24). The papers main claim is that in order to improve the quality and quantity of
renewable energy sources, special and innovative skills should be taught on a more normal basis,
especially in the fields of engineering, architecture, construction, etc. (Gordon, Soares, and
Steigleder). The article could be used in my essay to provide evidence of why it is crucial to
better prepare Americas workforce in going green. This source was originally published in the
Duke Forum For Law & Social Change, which was created by the Duke Law School in North
Carolina.

Towards Renewable Energy Sources: A Colour Choice Approach." Renewable &
Sustainable Energy Reviews 59. (2016): 1159-1169. Academic Search Complete. Web. 25
Feb. 2016.
Kiriaki Keramitsoglous article shows evidence of how alternative energy education
affects adolescents. Keramitsoglou describes the purpose of the article by stating:
Since climate change has become a cause for concern, citizens have to play a more active
role in the development of energy policy and the operation of energy market. In order to
meet the needs of decentralization of decision-making and the new responsibilities arisen
at regional and local level, public awareness of energy issues should be raised.
The article discusses a study on 234 Greek high school students that assesses their knowledge of
renewable energy. Keramitsoglou describes the procedure of the study, which was a survey, and
also reviews the results. The article is published in the journal of Renewable and Sustainable
Energy Reviews, which is owned by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). This source can be
used as evidence for my project because it shows recent data from an experimental study, and
also has an ample amount of information about why renewable energy education is vital,
particularly for adolescent students.

Mulvaney, Dustin. Solar Energy Isnt Always as Green as You Think. IEEE Spectrum. IEEE
Spectrum. 26 Aug. 2014. Web. 27 Feb. 2016.
The article primarily provides information on the negative effects of the production of
solar panels. Mulvaneys piece focuses on the toxicity, improper disposal, cost, and water waste
that factors into the production of photovoltaics. It urges readers to not ignore, but become
informed on both the benefits and drawbacks of solar energy, and also describes solutions that
are in the making to improve the wastefulness and dangers of solar panel production. Dustin
Mulvaney is an assistant professor of environmental studies at San Jose State University. He
focuses on solar energy, biofuel, and natural gas industries. Mulvaney is educated on the
background of his article, which establishes credibility and makes the facts and resources
provided more reasonable. Mulvaneys article would be beneficial to my research because he
urges readers to become more educated on the effects of alternative energy.

Sustainable Energy Systems." International Journal Of Hydrogen Energy 39.9. (2014):

This article advocates for an increase in education for the workforce in renewable energy.
In general, the article describes why advanced education is imperative in these fields, and also
discusses in particular the energy source of solar hydrogen. At one point, the authors mention a
document created by the United Nations that supports the development of clean energy, and
follows a description of it by saying The logical intention of the UN document is that the
development of renewable energy-related technologies must be accompanied by appropriate
modification of the education system, which is needed to educate the technical staff able to work
at the front line of environmentally friendly technologies (Nowotny et al.). I would use the
authors reference to this document as evidence of how increased attention to my subject is
currently happening. The article was published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy
in 2014, which is owned by the International Association for Hydrogen Energy.
