LESSON PLAN: Landforms Day 3

Enthusiastic About: Making meaningful connections between lesson content and the students home state of
Pennsylvania.

Materials: Ticket Out The Door summary sheet, Maptivation software, National Geographic website, World
Atlas, Map

Objectives:
The Students will:

Compare and contrast local (PA) landforms.

Measure distance and size of landforms and apply
mathematical operations to calculate the difference
between multiple digit numbers.

Assessment of Objective
Accomplishment:

Ticket out the Door

Teacher observation
Maptivation map

Procedure with Amount of Time Stated for Each Activity:

The teacher will generate a whole group discussion with students to review what they have learned so far. The class
will go over the Types of Landforms cut and paste activity from the previous lesson. (10 minutes)
Students will take a virtual fieldtrip to well-known landforms around the world using
https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=zEYnjATcBIVw.kkUu-UiDJBdE&hl=en_US. They will later be
asked to complete a ticket out the door to summarize what they learned during the virtual field trip. (10 minutes)
Students will explore the landforms of Pennsylvania. Using their laptops
(http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/namerica/usstates/paland.htm) and an atlas, students will work in
pairs to document landforms of Pennsylvania. One student will read while the other takes notes. The partners will
switch at the end of the text and re-read the text. They will then compare notes to edit and select the most important
information. The class will work together using maptivation software to create a graphic representation of the state
of Pennsylvania and its many landforms. They will create a unique map key to accompany their creation. The
teacher will prompt students to compare Pennsylvania landforms with national and global landforms. (20 minutes)
Students will use the interactive map from National Geographic to measure the border of a given state. They will
calculate distance and compare using the map scale. When comparing two different landforms, students will be
asked to find the difference between two distances (requiring subtraction of multiple digit numbers). (20 minutes)

State Standard(s) Addressed:

3.3.4.A6 Identify basic landforms using models and simple maps.
3.3.1.A4 Identify and describe types of fresh and salt-water bodies.
7.1.2.A Identify how basic geographic tools are used to organize information.
7.1.2.B Describe regions in geographic reference using physical features.
7.2.2.A. Identify the physical characteristics of places.
7.2.2.B. Identify the basic physical processes that affect the physical characteristics of regions.
2lNBT.A.4 Understand place value. Compare two three-digit numbers based on meaning of the hundreds, tens,
and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
2.MD.A.4 Measure and estimate lengths in standard units. Measure to determine how much longer one object is
than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
