The Revenant
Alejandro G. Inarritus outstanding film, The Revenant, follows the story of one of the
toughest men that walked the earth. Hugh Glass, a frontiersman, and his fellow hunters were on a
fur hunting expedition in the 1820s, when suddenly they were assaulted by a group of Native
Americans. Left in terrible condition, the hunters were forced to flee and head towards their
camp. While hiking back through the woods, Glass was mauled by a bear and left in critical
condition. As his son and fellow hunters find him, they decide that the best way out is to seek
help from their camp due to the harsh weather and pursuing natives. However, the men that were
in charge of looking over Glass decide to kill Hawk, Glass half Native American son and leave
Glass to die. After gaining consciousness, Glass, fueled by anger and hatred, decides to seek out
his vengeance by killing the men that took the life of his son. Glass utilizes his survival skills to
find his way back towards his camp while evading the natives.
A key theme throughout this film is the perseverance exhibited by Hugh Glass. Glass
kept stating, As long as you can grab a breath, you fight. You breathe keep breathing. Glass
believes that people should never give up, because as long as you can breathe, you are capable of
fighting. Glass never gave up; he continued to fight to very end, even when all the odds were
against him.
I find it poetic how this film is actually based off of a true story. It is extremely poetic
that Hugh Glass was so determined to live, even after everything he went through. He was forced
to do anything in order to survive, even if it seemed unfathomable. In addition, it is incredibly
poetic that Leonardo Dicaprio, the actor who portrayed Hugh Glass, ate a real bison liver during

the production of the film to capture the authentic feelings and emotions that Hugh Glass
experienced. Furthermore, it is also poetic that Dicaprio received his first Oscar award in his
career because of his incredible acting in The Revenant.
