Teaching Philosophy
I believe in, and cherish meaningful teaching that is palpable. I believe in a learnercentered classroom that promotes both purposeful and enduring experiences. I think that as a
teacher, it is my responsibility to get to know my students on a personal level. To discover what
kind of learners they are, and uncover what kinds of backgrounds and knowledge they can bring
to our group. I feel that it is my job to learn what my students want to achieve, so that I can mold
my instruction to fit their needs, and to accommodate them on an individual basis. It is top
priority to be aware of my students needs so that we as a classroom can be successful.
I believe in meaningful assessment that will show me where my learners are, which will
in turn help us build mutual learning goals. Knowing where my students are in their growth, I can
provide the adequate scaffolding they will need to build connections from what they already
know, to what they need to know. I embrace all active participation and active learning style
instruction because it stimulates the mind, adds interest, provides teacher and student
feedback, and encourages dialogue and community.
I crave structure in the classroom, as well as a kind community that will make all
students feel welcome, appreciated, and safe. I know that being flexible and well-thought-out,
are two very important teacher traits. I have seen that educators who show enthusiasm and
curiosity motivate students, and even their colleagues, to learn and collaborate. I aspire to work
with passionate and cooperating faculty so that we can advance as a team in our diverse
environment.
I believe that Nikos Kazantzakis does a great job of expressing the beauty of teaching
with but a few words. True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they
invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse,
encouraging them to create their own. My goal as a teacher is to awaken a passion in my
learners that will create a lifelong desire to continue absorbing and acquiring knowledge that will
make them into their best self.
