Lesson: Fantasy Creature Sculpture

Lesson Duration: 2 weeks

1.

Learning Target or objective:

Students will be able to plan and discuss ideas on what their fantasy flying creature will be,
their group members, and a leader of their group.
Students will sketch a 3-D view (front, back, side, and top) of their fantasy flying creature.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of creating a 3-D sculpture form and structure of
fantasy flying creature.
Students will need to incorporate paint and crate paper to final design of fantasy flying
creature.
Students will write a reflection on final design of fantasy creature and evaluate group
members participation and cooperation of the final work of art.

2. Standards: Standard 1 9-12 Benchmark 1A, 1B

Standard 2 9-12 Benchmark 2A
3. Assessment
Students will be assessed on a rubric. The rubric will assess students understanding of
additive/subtractive technique, use of textures, effort, and craftsmanship.
4. Materials: newspaper, dowels, scissors, and tape

5. Process:
Introduction:
First, students will write their journal entries and solve lateral thinking puzzle.
Then, I will move onto the fantasy creature project.
Explicit Instruction: Introduction of fantasy creature sculpture
I will explain to students that they will be working at their assigned group tables to create a sculpture.
The sculpture will be a fantasy creature.
**A fantasy creature is something that doesnt exist in the real world. Its made up.
You will be working in your table groups to create a sculpture of your fantasy creature using paper rolls.
The paper rolls will mimic the skeleton shape of your fantasy creature.

The fantasy creature needs to be monumental. Include wings. And paint/crate paper. (later)
Its an option to work as a group or work individually. (You do not have to be in a group)
GROUP RULES:
In your group of fours, you will pick a person to be the leader of your group.
The leader is not only responsible of the structural outcome of the project. They need to make sure
everyone is on track, everyone is doing their job, and everyone is contributing equally on the project.
AND, if you arent contributing to the project, your group members can kick you out. **If you get kicked
out, you will need to plan and work on your own.
(Once you have figured out your groups situation, youre ready to move onto the next step)
The planning process of your project:
Students will:
1. Discuss and decide on a fantasy creature. You will need to provide the name on the worksheet.
2. Discuss and decide which person is going to sketch a 3D view of your fantasy creature. For example:
One person does top view, another does side view, front view, and back view.
3. Each person will need to sketch a view of your fantasy creature. When you turn in your sketch, there
should be 4 different views of your sculpture.
After you have completed the worksheet, you will turn it into me to receive credit for completing the
sketch.
Check for understanding: What are your questions?
Modeling: Demo on paper rolls
I will reinforce what students will be doing/creating.
I will explain that students should already be in their table teams of 4 5 people.
What I will demo:
I will begin by laying out the materials that students will need to be successful in the project: Tape,
scissors, newspaper, and 2 size dowels
I will explain the rules of the materials:

That we dont use the dowels for anything other than rolling newspaper.

If students dont obey the rules of the materials, there will be consequences of having to write an essay
rather than working in a group to create a sculpture.
Students will begin by:
1. Tearing newspaper in half
2. Tear pieces of tape so that it will be easier to tape newspaper rolls after rolling newspaper
Dont use a lot of tape to secure newspaper after rolling it.
It only needs a tiny piece of tape

3. Roll the newspaper at an angle, make sure the dowel is parallel to you.
4. After rolling the newspaper, you will tape the end of the newspaper to secure it
5. Next, if you want to attach two newspaper rolls together, you can use a flat side of one
paper rolls and wrap it around another paper roll. This will secure it.
6. Continue process to complete sculpture form for head, body, legs, wings, etc.
Reminders: Triangles are sturdier than rectangles, so creating a triangle in your
sculpture will secure it.
If you need to cut two pieces from a single newspaper roll, make sure both ends
have tape on it.
Check for understanding: What are your questions? Do I need to repeat a step?
Guided Practice: I will circulate, assist, and answer any questions students may have about their print.
I will give one-on-one feedback about their fantasy creature sculpture
Closure: Students will turn in their final work of art that displays a fantasy creature, wings, crate paper,
and craftsmanship. I will grade their final work of art using a rubric.
