Discourse community 2

A discourse community is made up of a group of people with a common goal

or a common interest, values, writing standards, specialized vocabulary
which has specific lexis. Every discourse is very different and is good to know
how each of the many of the discourse works. A cheerleader and a church
group are examples of discourse community, and I am part of both discourse
communities.

DISCOURSE COMMUNITY

Discourse community 3

The definition of a discourse community is made up of a group of

people with a common goal or a common interest, values, writing standards,
specialized vocabulary which has specific lexis, also they share a certain
communication they use specialized genres like Facebook, e-mail, texts even
face to face, between them that they use to achieve their different goal and
supporting one another of the group. Every discourse is very different and is
good to know how each of the many of the discourse works.
A cheerleader team and a church group are examples of a discourse
community because it follows the characteristics that John Swales define in
their article, the six characteristics Swales talks about are that a discourse
community has common public goals ,has different ways of communication
among members ,also the member uses their own mechanism to provide
feedback as well as information to its members, utilize one or more genres in
order to communicate, when it refers to genres, a discourse community own
some specific lexis and lastly has a certain level of members with a suitable
degree of content and discourse skills, for example this two discourses
communities has certain goals that in this case are primarily set by the
coach or the captain in the cheerleading community and in the group church
by their coordinates .

The first discourse community I analyzed and observed was my

cheerleading team. Cheerleading is a good example off a discourse

community because they are a group of people that has a goal of won the
competition and be first placed or also to support people. According to the
coach of the discourse community Felipe Duenas, a coach from Vaqueros, he
says that their main goal that the team have is build place where you like to
be and make it to competition. Other goals they have are to earn money to
their competitions uniforms etc.
They use different types of communication like through groups in
Facebook. Only in this discourse community also have a specific lexis that
only this community uses, for example they have different names for their
jumps like the toe touch, the pike and the double nine. They also have
different names for their stunts like the stair stepper, the bump down etc.
This lexis only will know it people that join the discourse there are not
common outside the discourse. They also have names for the positions on
the stunts that are the base and the main base which are the ones that hold
the girl (flyer) in the air.
Have communication is very important in this community is like the
key to stay on point, this discourse have trainings where they communicate
with each other verbally, they also communicate through groups on
Facebook to be more communicate about when are the trainings or things
such what color of clothes they have to use for the trainings. Depends on the
team sometimes to join this discourse you have to try out to can join and in
other teams they just go and train, is a discourse where practice is

absolutely necessary. I am a part of this discourse community and it really is

an excellent and fun discourse.
The second discourse community I analyzed was a group in the church
where teenagers go study to do their confirmation. A group church like
cathequism it can be also a discourse community because they also have a
common goal that is praised god through different ways and also keep the
community together.
Every church group is different but in the group that I observe some of
the genres they have are meetings in the church every weekend where some
of the coordinators teach to their students, they also makes groups or pages
in Facebook, and sometimes bulletins. The communication they used is
basically scriptures from the bible, songs and also the prayers. Is a very nice
community. To join this community is not hard people just have to go into
church and it make feel people very comfortable.
There are very different discourses communities. Their goals are very
different one is more physical and the other is more spiritual. Both of the
discourse use Facebook groups to be more communicate to can get together
in their different meetings or trainings. Their lexis are very different but I
think every discourse has different lexis.
Each discourse community has their own ideas of how to success and
achievement, and it is this factor that defines them as a discourse
community.

Discourse community 6

Discourse communities are a very important thing in peoples lives

understanding the lexis and shared goals of any discourse community allows
us to move among communities efficiently and successfully, people may not
notice but everyone is in a discourse community it can be even in your
family or friends. Learning what a discourse community is and how it works
will make me see different each community. Get to know how the discourse
communities work and that are not the same as a speech community is
important there is interesting know how each community is different and
they have different goals.
