History of editing

The lumiere
brothers

Louis had made improvements to the still photograph process this

included the dry-plate process, which was a major step towards moving
images. This was one of the most notable changes.
When there father retired in 1892 the brothers began to create moving
pictures. They patented a number of significant processes leading up to
their film camera. This allowed them to use film through camera and
projector.

Edison
company
He developed many devices that had a major effect on the film industry
these included the phonograph, the motion picture camera.
he is often linked with the creation of the first industrial research
laboratory. He also invented sound editing. The Kinescope is an early
motion picture exhibition device.
The kinescope creates the illusion of movement by conveying a strip of
perforated film bearing sequential images over a light source with a
high-speed shutter

Dw Griffith
To watch his work is like being witness to the beginning of melody,
or the first conscious use of the lever or the wheel; the emergence,
coordination, and first eloquence of language; the birth of an art:
and to realize that this is all the work of one man. James Agee.
this quote shows that he was a man of great intelligence he made
the actors look better by using different camera angles to show
emotion differently. He made many different movies exceeding 500.
although the movies sold well the production costs were incredible
high meaning that he did not make a large profit however the movie
The birth of Nations was a massive hit costing 110,000 to make but
making a profit of millions of dollars

Edwin s porter
Edwin s porter was an American film pioneer, he
was best known as a producer, director, studio
manager and cinematographer he worked with
the company Edison Manufacturing and the
Famous Players Film Company. Porter made
the film the great train robbery in 1903. The film
was made up of one reel it had a running time of
twelve minutes this was ground breaking as its
use of cross cutting and editing to show
simultaneous action in different places was new
and had not been used to this extent before.

Lev kuleshov
For Kuleshov, the essence of the cinema was editing, the
juxtaposition of one shot with another. A film was shown to an
audience showing mosioukines face after looking at food, a dead
woman and a woman the audience experienced lust grief and
hunger. however the footage of Mosjoukine was actually the same
shot each time. Vsevolod Pudovkin (who later claimed to have
been the co-creator of the experiment) described in 1929 how the
audience "raved about the acting... the heavy pensiveness of his
mood over the forgotten soup, were touched and moved by the
deep sorrow with which he looked on the dead child, and noted the
lust with which he observed the woman. But we knew that in all
three cases the face was exactly the same.

Clapper board
A clapper bored is a devise that is used
in the film industry to signified a new
scene. This also allows the acting and
sound top be introduced more exactly
allowing the scene to run more
smoothly. This is the most commonly
used method in the film industry to set
the scene.

Compositing
Compositing is where you combine different parts
of a scene or object then edit them into a different
scene. Say you could film a person on the beach
then edit the back ground so it looks like there in a
forest.
The other names used for these are blue screen or
green screen. These aren't used at much in filming
though these days as digital image manipulation is
used instead.

Steenbeck
steenbeck is a name that is now used for a
flatbed film editing suite.
Steenbeck was a company that was known
well in the film industry. The company
produced thousands of these machines that
were used all around the industry to edit film.
The steenbeck machine was a preferred use
of equipment as it allowed the producer to look
at the film quickly with less chance of the film
being damaged.

Moviola
This is a machine that allows you to
be able to view film while editing it.
This devise was made by iwan
serrurier in 1924. this company is still
running now. The equipment
however was very expensive and not
many where sold.

vhs
Vhs is short for the video home
system. When these where first
produced they were only used at a
high professional level. Television
studios saw them as a threat
however as they would disrupt there
business. this was one of the first
devises that let you recorded at
home. This could be used at any
consumer level though however in a
later date.
