Three main roles of teachers have been mentioned in Farrells article

(2011). They are managers professionals and acculturators. As for

the first one, teacher plays the role of a manager. Here it means
that a good teacher needs to manage students, class time and class
activities. In other words, teachers are just like the whole class
leaders, who lead the students to experience all kinds of learning
activities in the classroom, by managing interaction between
teachers and students, as well as all teaching plans. The second role
played by teachers emphasizes the role of professionals. That is to
say, teachers need to be very professional about pedagogical
theories, teaching strategies as well as some teaching research
abilities. What is more, teachers should be good at psychological
and cognitive knowledge of students of different age groups such as
young kids, pupils, junior and senior school students, etc. Above all,
I think that teachers should be role models of their students. In
other ways, the teachers keen pursuit of scientific knowledge could
positively influence their students to develop rigorous and persistent
attitude towards their academic careers. And their positive life
attitude is also beneficial for their students to establish active life
value. In sum, apart from their parents, teachers could be the most
influential people for their students in every aspect. The of
accuturator means that teachers should have awareness of multiculture phenomena in the classroom. So, what teachers can do is to
foster their students awareness of multi-culture phenomena and
provide good learning environment to learners from different
cultural backgrounds. For example, English would be dominant
culture in most of the classes. However, eastern culture, Muslim and
other culture would also exist in a learning environment. So, what
the teachers can do is to call the students awareness of the
existence of multi-culture, and let the students respect individual
culture and learn from each other. This is important for learners in
the context of multi-culture.
Being a L2WT, I think that I have experienced those three roles
while I am serving as an internship assistant this term. For example,
before the class I had an introduction about myself and I started to
know a little bit about students from their introduction. As time goes
on, the students become familiar with me. Then, they start asking
me questions about the homework or the due day. Some of the
students even text me and ask me to teach them how to do the
homework. So, the above examples show that teachers play the role
of managers in the daily teaching practice to maintain good
interaction with their students.
As for the role of professionals, here is another example. Being a
teacher, I pay special attention to my dressing. When I go to class, I
am very careful with my dressing. As a tutor, I should wear
appropriately and be careful about the words I said. In my opinion,
teachers behaviors could have potential influence upon their
students. So, I pay special attention to my dressing and words to the
students. I think this is the essential requirement of professionals.

Meanwhile, I also pay attention to the students mental health. For

example, in the middle of the semester, a few students dropped the
class. So, some students did not have a normal discussion group
that time. I noticed that a student worked alone few times. When I
talk to him, he had no idea about what the discussion is about and
what kind of questions he could ask. He looks desperate and
suffering. This is not good for his performance in class. Then, I
decide to sit next to him and encourage him to join in another group
discussion. This has helped the student release his psychological
pressure and become active learner.
As for the differences between a tutor and an on-service teacher are as follows.
Tutors age might be more similar to the students. A lot of my students prefer
asking the teachers questions instead of asking me. Also, they think what the
teacher told them is correct and a lot of students do not trust what the
explanation I gave it to them. They think I am in their age, so they are not afraid
of me or have trust on me. They think the class teacher is the person who grades
them. So, they trust the class teacher in the better way. For their opinions, I am
the person who just helps
them with their homework or I am just an outsider observer. I think in the future
teaching I need to learn how to become a real teacher instead of a tutor. I will let
students trust me and learn more things from my class observation.
