S.L.O.

Reflection:
Dear Breanne,
Over the past sixteen weeks, we have had to focus on the following five
student learning outcomes as we worked on assignments. I have listed under each
outcome how and when it was used by myself.
1. Analyze Rhetorical Situation:
This SLO requires us to realize who we are writing to, what we are writing
about and why we are writing about it to that certain audience. The example of
where this was done would be the analytical report. For this report, we had to
identify an issue that we cared about, and that was our purpose for writing about it.
Then we had to realize within that purpose, what we would focus on. After deciding
that, we had to figure out the proper audience to appeal to so that we could get
them to see our issues importance. If we chose the wrong audience, they wouldnt
be as passionate as we are about our issue.
2. Find and Evaluate Information:
This SLO requires us to acquire information from credible sources. In our case,
we really had to do this with the analytical report. For this assignment, we had to
retrieve information from credible secondary peer reviewed sources and from
credible primary sources. For the secondary, we had to include why we chose the
specific articles and discuss how they relate to our topic. For the primary sources,
we had to create a survey with topic specific question to ask fifty people, and we
had to interview two people who had experienced our issue first hand. If we didnt
choose credible sources, then in turn, we would lose our credibility.
3. Compose Documents:
This SLO requires us to organize documents in a way that will be beneficial for
our goal. An example of this would be this portfolio project. We have had to put
together all of our work from the major writing assignments to fit into the
requirements that you created for the portfolio. They have to be in the specific order
on our website. This has required me to organize vent the formatting of each
document, so that they look similar as they go together for the portfolio.
4. Present Documents:
This SLO requires us to present documents using visuals and organization of
said visuals and information. The main example of this would be the oral
presentation from the analytical report. For this presentation, we had to first
actually create a PowerPoint presentation from our paper analytical report. After
doing this, we included a few more graphics, and we formatted the information
differently. By differently, I mean that we made short bullet point statements on
each slide, and then we gave more detailed information based off of the short
statements. This is to keep the reader looking at me, the presenter, rather than the
screen.

5. Compose in Various Modes:

This SLO requires us to format information into more than one form of work.
By this, I mean that information could be put into document form or into PowerPoint
form. This again was represented in the oral presentation that we had to do for the
analytical report. This assignment required us to format our information into not
only a document that we had to turn in, but we also had to create a PowerPoint with
the same information to present. The difference was that in the paper, the had to
include all information in the text, while in the power point, we only included short
bullet point statements that we really used more as guidelines for us to give the
detailed information off of.

Sincerely,
Austin Jones
