WHY TORTURE DOES NOT WORK
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade you to gain understanding of how our government has
improperly violated the human rights of thousands in effort to garner unusable
intelligence to combat the war on terror, and to create a desire to become actively
engaged in the effort to thwart these illegal abuses

Transition (if needed) III. Do you want to know what is happening, or is your intent to
simply sit with your head in the sand, and pretend people are not
being tortured at the hands of the American government?
Preview:
IV. In the pre-9/11 era the United States was the world leader in
Human Rights support, today everything is changed, let me tell
you how and why.
A. The U.S. once was the moral leader of the free world; today
this is simply not the case.
B. What our government does today to those it fears.
C. What our presidents are being told and by whom.
D. There are those in the military who to continue to speak out
against human rights abuses.
E. What the soldiers say changes everything.
When we torture, we stoop to the same level of terror used so wantonly by our
enemies.
Second Main Point
There are those who still believe and work to thwart those who would violate the
rights of others.
Fourth Main Point
IV. I learned the truth about the value of torture from a common
soldier.
A. Torture does not garner usable intelligence.
B. Torture is not the moral high ground.
C. There is no ethical approach to the use of torture.
We are protected by the Bill of Rights and Constitution of the United States.
