Elements of Effective Instruction

Elements Total Points: ___22___ /25

Anticipatory Set Creative, engaging,

and highly effective
at focusing the
learners attention
and tapping prior
knowledge. It
requires active
participation from
learners and
includes a clear
statement of the
learning objective.

Effective at focusing
the learners attention
and tapping prior
knowledge. It requires
participation from
learners and includes
a statement of the
learning objective.

Not effective at
focusing the learners
attention and tapping
prior knowledge. It
does not require
participation from
learners or it does
notinclude a statement
of the learning
objective.

I thought your anticipatory set was

perfect for this lesson: -whats a
pronoun? -whats a verb? -what does
it mean to agree? All of your students
were engaged and working hard on the
concepts. You were very clear that
what you would be working on today
was making the pronoun agree with
the verb. I thought you and the
students struggled to articulate what
agree means you might research
this and plan for a follow-up minilesson. (4)

Modeling

Teacher models some

expected learning
outcomes for the
learners.

Teacher does not

modelexpected
learning outcomes for
the learners.

At the board you were very explicit

about the learning outcomes you were
expecting students to achieve and you
showed them how to complete the
activities.(5)

Guided Practice Clear, concrete,

effective strategies
provide
opportunities for all
learners to
demonstrate
understanding with
support from the
teacher.

Effective strategies
provide opportunities
for most learners to
demonstrate
understanding with
support from the
teacher.

Ineffective strategies
provide few
opportunities for
learners to
demonstrate
understanding with
support from the
teacher.

You provided a list of pronouns and a

list of verbs and showed students how
to match them using the correct form of
the verb. Most students got this on
the first pass, and all seemed to get it
by the end of the lesson.(5)

)Closure

Closure is provided

that requires some
closure.
participation from
learners and
reinforces the learning
objective(s).

Teacher clearly and

explicitly

learning outcomes
for the learners.

Concise closure is
provided that
requires active
participation from
learners and
effectively reinforces
the learning
objective(s).

Here you were less explicit and I

almost missed your closure. You need
to wrap up your lesson in a bow! One
of my students tells his class this is
closure of the lesson; why is closure
important? and I think this helps with
the transition as well as finalizing
concepts in the lesson. (3)

Observer

What a fantastic class you have! You have developed a lovely, respectful culture in which all students are expected to
learn and demonstrate good behavior. Your lesson was a good one! Important! You allowed time for critical thinking
which is so important. Next time get really ,really clear on how to present the concept of agreement between
pronoun and verb. Id suggest a follow up mini-lesson in case any of the students missed the concept. I dont think
they did, but this would be a good exercise for you, the teacher. Great job! Merry Christmas!
