Electricity

and Magnetism Science Fair

You are given the task of creating a science project with an accompanying experiment to
demonstrate a specific topic about electricity or magnetism. To help you, follow these steps to
a successfully completed assignment:
1. Brainstorm and then choose a topic. It can be from the list below or one of your
choosing. If you choose your own topic, please be sure to check with Mr. Hiebert that it
is an appropriate choice. Some example topics are:
Circles of Magnetism
Lenzs Law
Eddy Currents
Series/Parallel Circuits
Air Batteries
Electrolysis of Water
Measuring Conductivity
Electroscopes
The Curie Point
Joule Heating
Photoelectricity
Battery Series
Motors
Fruit Batteries
Electromagnetic Induction
Dissolved Substances In Water
That Conduct Electricity
Conduction and Insulation
Controlling Static Electricity
OR CHOOSE YOUR OWN!
2. Research both the experiment but more importantly you need to be able to explain
what the electrical or magnetic phenomena behind it (aka. Why does it happen?)
3. Design your experiment. Ask yourself the following questions:
o What materials do you need?
o How long will it take?
o How will you record your data?
o Will you be able to show it to the class during the final presentation?
o What are the steps to complete the experiment?
o What do you need to change and what do you need to keep the same for each
test?
4. Conduct your experiment and record the data from it.
5. Think about how you are going to communicate your findings. You will need to do this in
two ways: in a spoken presentation and visually (using a poster or digital presentation
tool). Begin to plan and design your script for the presentation and the visual part.
6. Complete the script and visual component that contains the following information for
your project:
o An introduction to your project
o The phenomena your experiment shows
o The design of your experiment and prediction so for what you think will happen
o Your materials list and procedure
o Your data, a report on your findings, an analysis how they matched up with your
predictions and how the experiment showed your electrical/magnetic
phenomena

7. Complete your visual part. It should indeed include pictures or images to help show your
findings. This should include both pictures from when you conducted your experiment
as well as any additional pictures that will strengthen your presentation.
8. PRACTICE YOUR PRESENTATION!

Your project will be assessed on the following 3 things.
Visual Presentation
o Experiment Explanation and Design
o Predictions, Procedure, and Materials List
o Phenomena Explanation
o Data and Findings
o Connections
o Visuals
Oral Presentation
o Clear and confident speech
o Body language and eye contact
o Practice is evident (pronunciation of words is correct and youre are fully ready
to present)
Experiment
o Experiment can be shown to audience or at least results/process can be shown
o You can communicate your findings and the connections from your experiment
to the phenomena to the audience
o Your experiment is prepared and ready to be presented.
Content
o You show an understanding of the content and can give examples to illustrate it
o You can make connection from the content to your experiment or real life
o You can use language/vocabulary to discuss the topic
o You anticipated the audience, explaining new concepts/vocabulary so that the
audience can understand.
o Uses unique sources of information and those sources are identified.

Have fun, use your time wisely, and hope this project is electric and acts
like a magnet between science and you!
