Symposium Assignment Cover Sheet

This assignment is to help you get the most out of being an audience participant at Symposium,
but please do not let it limit your interactions. I have designed this assignment to be brief so that
you can focus your attention on the presenter but that you also have guidance in types of
questions that you can ask and posters to look for.

For this assignment you must:

Talk with at least two presenters whose research is in or similar to your field of interest.
(Page 2)
Talk with at least two presenters whose research is not in your field or discipline. (Page 3)
Talk with at least one presenter whose research has immediate real world implications.
(Page 4)

Other Requirements

You must visit at least five different posters to complete this assignment (i.e. you cannot
use the same poster twice).
You must visit at least one poster in each room.

The due date for this assignment is Friday, April 22nd at 5pm. Late submissions will not be
accepted under any circumstances since I submit your grades shortly after this. You may either
submit:

To my mailbox in the UROP office by 5 PM.
On the assignments page of CTools by 5 PM.

Please do not e-mail assignments to me. If you are going to handwrite the assignment please make
sure it is neat and legible. You do not have to use this handout if you dont want to as long as all of
the requested information is included in your assignment. A copy of this is also on CTools if you
want to print it or want to type your answers.

1. Projects Similar to your Own:
Poster 1
Project Title:__________NASA MMS Mission Initial Observations_________________________
Student(s) Names(s):_____________Anindita Mukherjee___________________________
Department:___________CLASP___________________________________________
Room:________________________Ballroom____________________________________
Poster 2
Project Title:_____________Developing an Accurate Arduino powered Motor Controller___________
Student(s) Names(s):______________Emily Liu_______________________
Department:___________Department of Chemistry____________________________________
Room:___________________Ballroom____________________________________

Ask the student presenters the following questions:
a) Why did you choose this project?
b) What was the most challenging part of your project?
Answer the following questions yourself:
a) How did talking to the students and reviewing their posters help you make connections
to your own research work?
b) Did their research expand your understanding of your own research question? If not,
why not?

For Poster 1, the connection I made to my own project was what my system could be
potentially used for. It was a great feeling seeing how potentially my work would be able to
help scientists gain more data about the solar system. However, their research did not
expand my understanding of my own research question as it was completely unrelated to
engineering. For Poster 2, this was a controls experiment, similar to what will most likely
be implemented through my project in the near future. Their research did expand my
understanding of my own research question as it looked further ahead into what some of
the next steps of my research would be.

2. Projects Different than your own/outside your discipline:

Poster 3
Project Title:__________New Opportunity for 2D Material Based Transistors____________________
Student(s) Names(s):______________Nathan Sheperd_________________________
Department:___________MECHENG___________________________________________
Room:_______Ballroom____________________________________________
Poster 4
Project Title:_________Statistical Potential for Beta Sheet Topologies in Computation Design of
Proteins___________________
Student(s) Names(s):______Zach Orbon__________
Department:_____Department of Computational Medicine__________________________________
Room:_____________Ballroom________________________________________

Choose two posters conducted on a topic not covered by your own discipline. Ask the student
presenters the following questions:
a) Why did you choose this project?
b) Did this project meet your expectations? Why or why not?
c) Did you learn anything that you think will impact your future goals?
Answer the following questions yourself:
a) What was new or surprising about this project?
b) How can this project, field, or type of thinking help you in research or academics in your
field?
For poster 3, the surprising thing about this project was that the transistor they created
had 4 different levels, which allows those transistors to store 2 bits of information rather
than the regular 1 bit of information usually stored on a transistor. That in my opinion was
very cool, however this does not really help my type of thinking as apparently it was not
expected and more discovered by luck. Poster 4 was also new in that they were using
computational methods to design proteins, something that I never expected biologists
could do. This type of thinking could help me in my own research project as I could use
computational methods to further optimize my system.

3. Poster 5: A project that has real world implications

Project Title:_________Development of Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay__________
Student(s) Names(s):_______________Matthew Wolberg______________________________
Department:_________BME_________________________________________________
Room:__________Ballroom_______________________________________________________
List 1 research project you learned about today that has real world implications, and answer the
following questions:
a) How did the students explain the connection between the work they did this year and
how it might be applied to future applications?
b) How might these projects be of benefit to you and/or society in the years to come?
The student explained how this project could lead to a potential improvement in time it
takes to test blood samples for diseases and other things. This project will benefit all of us
as it will help us be better diagnosed and tested quicker rather than having to use large
amounts of blood and waiting weeks for results.
