Mini Lesson Plan

Teacher Name: Murat Konac

Grade/Subject: 7th Grade Science
Timeline: 15 minutes
TEKS: 7.14AC Genetics: The student is expected to define heredity as the
passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next generation
AND recognize that inherited traits of individuals are governed in the
genetic material found in the genes within the chromosomes in the nucleus.
Lesson Objective: Showing a set of images illustrating fruit fly variances,
students will analyze and explain which set of male/female fruit flies is the
most likely parent pair by answering questions on the activity handout.
Introduction: (3-4 minutes)
Set induction: I will show students a short video about genetics. Students
will write down genetic related words on the handout.

After video, students will share the words with class.
Instructional Activities and Procedures: (8- 10 minutes)
In the demonstration the teacher will introduces students to the concept of
inherited traits by examining a set of images illustrating fruit fly variances.
Students are presented with an individual with certain physical traits and
asked to choose which set of male/female fruit flies is the most likely parent
pair.
After students are done with activity, students will share their answer with
class.
Materials: Projector, Laptop, Video, Notebook, Key concept notes, Activity
Handout, Quiz, Index Card
Assessment: Students will answer three multiple choice questions about
heredity. (4 minutes)
Closure: Students will write one thing they learned or like in this lesson on
index card. (2 minutes)

Set Induction: Write down genetic related words on the below from the
video.

Key Concepts
1.
Traits of an individual organisms result from a hereditary process that
passes genetic material from one generation to the next. The inherited
traits of individuals are governed in the genetic DNA material found in the
genes within chromosomes in the nucleus of previous generations.
2.
Genetic DNA material is inherited from both parents in sexual
reproduction. Inherited traits include expressed external characteristics such
as eye color and hair color, and internal characteristics such as blood type.
Inherited traits are not affected by the organisms surroundings.

3.
Heredity is the process by which characteristics are transmitted from
parents to their offspring. The units of inheritance are genes and are stored
within the chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell.
Fruit Flies Genetic Activity

As you observe the images above, answer the following questions. Be

prepared to defend your conclusions.
1.

Which set of fruit flies is most likely the offsprings parents?

2.

What characteristics do you observe that lead you to that conclusion?

3.

What do you know about heredity that leads you to that conclusion?
