Section 1
1. Answer the following:
(a) Define a basis of a vector space. Is = {0} is a basis for R? Justify.
(b) Define Linear Transformation. Give an example of transformation which is not linear.
(c) Define Subspace of a vector space. Show that union of two subspace may not be a subspace
(d) Can we find limx1 JxK? Justify.

2. Let V be the set of all ordered pairs (x, y), where x, y are real numbers Let v1 = (x1 , y1 ), v2 = (x2 , y2 )
be two elements in V . Define the addition as
v1 + v2 = (x1 , y1 ) + (x2 , y2 ) = (x1 x2 , y1 y2 )
and the scalar multiplication as
(x1 , y1 ) = ( x1 , y1 )
Show that V is not a vector space. Which of the properties are not satisfied.
