Lesson Plan: Pre-Algebra, Grade 8

Date: April 1, 2016

Teacher: Mustafa Yazici
Grade: 8, Pre-Algebra
Lesson:
Content Area: Mathematics- Algebra
Timeline of Lesson: Two-45 minute periods. Additional Time will be needed if they
majority of the class having hard time to understand.
Standards:
8.EE.A- Work with radicals and integer exponents.
8. EE.A.2 Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of
the form x = p and x = p, where p is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots
of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that v2 is
irrational.
8. EE.A.3 Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times a whole-number
power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many
times as much one is than the other.
8.EE.A.4 - Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including
problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation
and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small
quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific
notation that has been generated by technology.
Essential Questions:

Big ideas:
1. I know there are numbers that are not rational, and I can approximate them by
rational numbers.
2. I can work with radical and integer exponents.
Essential Questions:
Why is it helpful to write numbers in different ways?

Evaluate expressions: a^2 + b - c^2 when a=12, b=-9, c=4,

Exponents: (3/4)^2

a. 6/8

b. 9/4

Skills: Review laws of exponents

Start with a question: What is an exponent?
continue with Product rules and Quotients Rules (provoke them to remember the
answer: Product is basically inverse operation of Division )
Then use product rules and Quotient rule to show them power rules.
and then Negative exponent along with zero rules
One rules and minus one rule (-1)n when it is either n is even or odd

Application: Geometry (finding area and perimeter of shapes given

different information)

iPad: Khan Academy

Task: 1.Give an example in which you multiply two numbers and get a
product that is less than the original two numbers. 2. Determine whether the statement
is true or false and explain: The quotient of two numbers is always less than both
original numbers.

REFLECTION: Watch for the understanding of the material understood by students as I
move from one piece to build up the next. Since it is the new concept I will be very
cautious if the learning takes place or not.
