Clothing and Equipment for Himalayan High Altitude Trekking from the desk of Harshaya
Kanak Dave, (D.F.T)
(High Altitude Trekking)
Although clothing & equipment for trekking and mountain walking is not very special yet some
items are such which are not used in daily life. Secondly, the equipment has to be such which may
not be bulky and heavy rather it should be light and warm so that it can protect you from rain,
snow, cold and strong winds at times. The temperature changes quickly in the mountains, from a
hot day to the cold and chilly strong wind. The selection of proper clothing and equipment therefore
is essential for contributing to the success of the trip and enjoying holidays in the Himalaya.
Following few hints will help and guide in your selection. Two types of equipment are required on
a trek. The camp equipment and the personal equipment. The camp equipment is generally
provided by the organizers which includes tents, mattresses and kitchen utensils ete. Sleeping bag is
optional as most of the trekkers wish to use their own, Personal equipment includes the following :
(1) Boots ; Trekking is completely a foot work and so if your feet are strong, healthy, unhurt
and free from blisters then you can enjoy trekking and holidays. For this you should choose
comfortable boots which are light, flexible but strong and comfortable with 2-3 pairs of socks /
stockings. Since you would be walking for 2-3 weeks continuously, another light — weight pair of
boots will also be helpful.
(2) Socks : ‘Trekkers prefer woolen socks and stockings which should be washed and changed
frequently as dirty socks cause blisters and give bad smell. You can use powder if your feet
perspire.
(3) Trousers /Shorts /Skirts : Jeans are the best companion of the trekkers for their strength
and using them without washing for long but they should not be very tight. Most of the trekkers use
old trousers by making them plus four and adding some pockets. Shorts are also preferred for easy
movement. The ladies can wear skirts if they do not like trousers / shorts.
(4) Underwear : In addition to general underwears, some woolen underweats like long-johns
will be useful for heights and cold nights.
(8) Shirts/Jumpers : More layers are preferred to one heavy woolen shirt / jumper. So a warm
singlet or cotton shirt / jumper and T-shirt should be added.(6) Woollen Pullover/Wind Jacket/Down Jacket ; For morning / evening and cold night, a
woolen pullover should be handy. A wind-jacket is always good for wind and rain as itis light to
carry and comfortable to use. For hands, a pair of woolen gloves will be useful for cold and wind
and rain as it is light to cary and comfortable to use. For hands, a pair of woolen gloves will be
useful for cold and wind, For high and cold region, down-jacket is a must.
(7) Headgear : For sun, a sun-hat for protection of face and neck is important as most of the
trekkers get sun-burn from the direct sun. Some keep a woollen hat for morning/evening and high
altitudes. Instead of this, a balaclava can be a good substitute which will protect your ears and neck
also.
(8) Goggles/Sun glasses : At higher altitude where there is snow and ice, a strong glare can affect
your eyes so badly that you can not do a thing for 3 days. You must use snow goggles from sun-rise
to sun-set even if it is cloudy. For lower heights, sun-glasses with light colour are good and should
always be used. Please do not immitate Sherpas for not using such things.
(9) Umbrella: Umbrella is a good companion for rain, sun, snow and even as a walking stick
(10) Rucksack/Daypack : Only a day-pack mediuam size Rucksack will do in which one can keep
his day’s requirements and camera and rest of the equipment is carried by porters. Hence you will
bring your own mid-size rucksack alongwith rain coat & wind cheater.
(11) Walking Stick : It is recommended for support while crossing streams and difficult terrain.
Miscellaneous
a, For Face: Cold cream, anti sun-burn cream, chapstick, shaving kit for gents, a looking
mirror to see your sun-burn, toilet articles, soap, paste, brush, nail-cutter, powder, sun/snow goggles
two pairs, insect repellent etc.
b, First Aid : Small first aid box, medicines prescribed by doctors to some, sterilization tablets.
chocolates, plaster & bandage,
¢. General: Cigarettes, lighter, thermos/water bottle, sanitary towels, toilet-paper, towel,
personal requirements of ladies, pencils, note-book, knife, torch, whistle and compass if need be.
Binocular if you are a bird-watcher.
