Awareness of ASUs Resources and Effectiveness In Academic Success

Introduction:
Our group decided to research the topic of ASUs resources and how it impacts a students
academic ability and success. We had a total of 235 responses while asking the questions: what
year the student is in, if they live on or off campus or an online student, if they are aware of the
resources offered and check which ones, as well as rating the resources, if they think visiting
professors office hours is beneficial and their academic standing. The tools we used to collect all
this information was first on Google From to collect results then Excel to analyze the results.
Discussion:
When looking at the majority of our responders it is clear to see that students academic year
majority fall into the Freshmen and Sophomore class. Along with some Junior and Senior
students and very minimal graduate students (about .9%).

Out of all of the responses, close to half of the 235 students who took the survey, were students
that were living off campus. The options were on-campus, off-campus, and an online student. A
backfire from this data could be students mistakenly assume they are both if they are taking some
classes online as an online student but also lives off-campus.

The next chart represents the results on whether or not the 235 students know of the areas of
services Arizona State University has for all students. A little more than 77% of students were
aware of the resources available at ASU, meanwhile the rest of the 23% was not aware.

The next chart shows of the respondents of how many students knew about each given service
that ASU provides. More than 77% of students know about ASUs Writing Center, Career Center,
and Math and Science Tutoring and barley 11% knows of the free tax service ASU has for
students.

The next questions we asked in the survey was about the usage of the resources offered. On a
scale of one to five, students were asked if they used the resources very minimally or not at all
(one) or up to using them a lot (five). Our research found that while a good majority of students
were aware of the resources, they for the most part were not using the resources. 30.6% (72) of
students said they did not use the resources at all, 31.9% (75) said they rarely used the resources,
and 25.5% (60) of students used the resources sometimes. Only 5.1% (12) of respondents said
that they used the resources that ASU provides all the time.

To our surprise 69% of students believed that going to professors office hours were more
beneficial than to go to any of the academic resources. There were still some people that believed
that the services ASU provided were more beneficial than going to office hours, 30.6% to be
exact.

This whole research survey was based on the academic success of students with the use of
resources and the only way to check that is to look at students success by looking at their grades
(in relation to this survey at least). Majority of students had an average grade of a B and no one
had a grade of a D (which is good!).

Total Analysis:
When looking at our data and charts, we came to the conclusions that although students are
informed about the resources that ASU offers us, most students find it more beneficial to get help
from their actual professor then another resource such as the Writing Center. A question that we
all have is why do office hours seem to be more in favor? Is it because students are getting help
from their teacher who can help more with the teachers own class versus someone who is
familiar with the class? What we can infer from our research is that students may prefer to go to
their own teacher because it is someone they are familiar with and ultimately the teacher knows
the curriculum better than anyone else and what he or she expects of you. We found that although

students are not using the resources provided, their awareness still has a correlation with their
grades being that majority of the students researched did have an A or B average.
