Make a list of the most recent ones (as many as you can think of...it doesn't have to be exhaustive!)

2) Changes in medium change composition(s). How did the change in medium (from book to movie,
for instance) affect the content of the composition (think about composing features discussed in our
reading "Situating Literacy" (ET Ch. 1 - see page 19).
The change in medium can affect the content of the composition making it either more or less
informative. For example, a book is more descriptive and vivid in describing events, while
movies focus more on visual motion to tell the story.
3) What sort of literacies does the video address? What does it say about our approach to creating
literate students?
This video addresses both political and academic literacy, while trying to push pop culture
literacy to the back of students minds. This video shows that America considers social
media more important than academics.

What Every American Should Know

1) The author asks us at the end of his article, "What ten things do you feel are both required
knowledge and illuminating gateways to those unenlightened about American life?" and gives us his
entries. Do you recognize all of his entries? Which ones do you know? How well do you know them?
All of these entries are almost unrecognizable. The only ones known are nativism and The
American Dream, and a brief overview can be given about these topics but nothing too
descriptive.
2) What does the video say about cultural literacy today?

This video says that Americans understanding of cultural literacy (on past events especially)
is disappearing.
3) What thoughts do you have about Hirsch's list (one page of it, anyway - since it's 5,000+ entries,
let's not tackle all of it today).
Our thoughts on Hirschs list is that it is not diverse and therefore does not tackle all aspects
of cultural literacy. After all, America is a salad bowl, a mixture of people from different ethnic
groups

Cultural Literacy
1)

Faking Cultural Literacy in comparison to What Every American Should Know, sees
social media as being the main focus of our cultural cannon. What Every American
Should Know, perceives our cultural cannon as focusing more on white core beliefs, and
past events. I believe it depends because you can learn about a variety of information
quickly. However, you learn this information second-hand.

2)

I define the concept of busy as being overly opinionated. I dont believe this is a cultural
myth because it is a known fact that we are constantly adding our unwanted opinions to
topics (that we know little about).

Cultural Literacy: Is it Time?

1)

The author believes that the argument about cultural literacy is important because it
could allow us to become more diverse as a community.

2)

I recognize Ernest Hemingway, Ghandi and Henry David Thoreau.
