their own that can be sold to classmates. They will also know
how to create their business logo to represent what their
business means to the community.
2. Literacy: Students will know how to form an opinion and how
to articulate that opinion. Students will use their experience,
background knowledge, and evidence to support their point of
view.
3. Mathematics: Students know how to add and subtract
money. They also know the value of money and how to buy
and sell products using money.

Grade Level*: 4th

Class Periods Required:
(please circle)
Approximately 5 class
periods, but may need to
adjust depending on
students work

Essential Questions (1-2)*:

What are some products that could be made to sell at
your business?
How does building businesses and creating a town go
hand in hand with community?
How can you determine how much to sell your product
for?

Content Areas Integrated*:

1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: Native American
Jewelry and Weaving)
The students will be given free range when it comes to
them creating a product that can be sold by their
business. The example provided will stem from Native
American craft. Although my example stems from and is

Instructional Strategies (Teachers approach to helping students

achieve learning)
4. The teacher will be there for guidance throughout
this entire process, however, there will be a lot
emphasis put on the students and their ability to
work together in groups in order to build
community.
5. The teacher will emphasize the importance of
contributing and being a member of a group in a
respectable, non-dictating way.
6. There will be mostly small group work, with very
little class-wide discussion along with individual
work.

elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion ,please be
very specific, walk me through step by step of the What of what is
happening with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):

1. Before the lesson, we will have been working with learning

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template

inspired by the Native Americans, students will be able
to create any product they would like from food, jewelry,
posters, games, etc. The visual art concept grows even
deeper when it comes to putting together their
business. They will create a sign for their business, a
logo, and even an advertisement if they wish. This will
be a time to use visual art to express what their
business does and create visually appealing work.
2. Literacy
Literacy will be integrated through their opinion piece
written at the end of the lesson. The students will have
the opportunity to explain and defend their opinion on
why they enjoyed or did not enjoy this lesson. In
providing evidence for their opinion, they will be
explaining what they learned, liked, and disliked.
3. Mathematics
The classroom will have their own currency of coins and
dollars that will be represent the same worth as our
American currency of $20, $10, $5, and $1 bills along
with quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. This will
allow students to practice adding and subtracting
money as well as giving change once the students begin
to buy and sell their products to one another. They will
also get to work with distributing money equally at the
end of the lesson when each business must split their
income equally.
4. Social Studies
There will be a short 2-minute video about Native
Americans to explain to the students who Native
Americans are. From here I will ask what they learned
about the Native American culture and I will go into
detail about weaving and bracelet making. I would
explain that Native Americans would give these
bracelets as a symbol of friendship and the concept

about money and decimals in math, along with learning

about opinion pieces of writing in Language Arts.
2. To introduce the lesson, I will begin by showing the class
Native American Jewelry. We will discuss how the Native
Americans created their own jewelry along with weavings. We
will discuss how these could be used for trade, or for their
own. This mini lesson will lead into the introduction to our
lesson.
3. Next the teacher will explain to the class that we are going
to make a community in our classroom. It will be the
students job to get in groups of 3 or 4 and create a product
that they can make just like the Native Americans did with
their bracelets.
4. The students will work in a group to create a product, a
price for the product, a business name, and an advertisement
for their product.
5. After a working on their business they will collaborate to
create a name for our classroom town. From here we will
have an afternoon where we turn our classroom into our town
and all of the businesses are set up in our town.
6. The business owners will set up their sign, their table, their
product, etc.
7. We will pick careers out of a hat and the students income
will be determined by their career. We will have a town wide
currency and depending on the students career path, they
will receive a certain amount of money.
8. From here the students will buy products from other
businesses and sell their products to other classmates using
their currency. This will allow them to work with addition and
subtraction along with decimals.
9. There needs to be a requirement of buying at least 6
different products to ensure that students are actually
participating. At the end of the day, each business will split

remains popular today. I will tell the class that an option
for a product to sell would be friendship bracelets and I
would provide examples of what that would look like.

Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:

The opening will be discussing Native American jewelry to get
the students thinking about what products they want to sell for
their business. This will get the class thinking about products
that can be made by hand.

Formative Assessment strategy: (how will you assess while the

learning is happening?)

The formative assessment will be the lottery or tickets being

handed out by the teacher during the town simulation. The
lottery will be the money that students receive when acting
like helpful parts of the community while the tickets will be
given to the students are not acting as helpful parts of the
community.

what money they have among the members of the group. If

students are misbehaving, the teacher can write them a
ticket that they need to pay off with their money. If students
are seen being kind, building relationships, and depicting
community they could win the lottery and receive more
money.
10. Students will compare who has what money, why they
think certain people have more money, who has the most
products, etc.
11. The following day the teacher will ask the students to
type an opinion piece over their classroom town. They will be
asked to share what they liked or disliked and why. They will
be asked to explain if they enjoyed the lesson and saw it as
beneficial or not and why.
12. These papers will be turned in at the end of the lesson for
the teacher to examine the students opinions over the
lesson plan.
Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student share what they
learned):

The students will share their business and product during our
town activity in class. The students will reflect what they
learned, liked, and disliked in the opinion paper that will be
written following this assignment.

Summative Assessment strategy*:

The summative assessment will be the opinion paper
completed following this assignment. This will be a time for
students to dig into why they like or disliked about the
assignment and why so the teacher can hear their opinion
along with what they have learned.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
The students will have prior knowledge of simply seeing businesses around their own community. They will have the prior
knowledge of working with money so they will be able to buy and sell products with their classmates along with distributing
their earnings at the end of their business simulation. The students will have also already been working on opinion writings,
so they are familiar with what is being asked of them for this aspect of the lesson as well.
Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning
There is no technology being used for this lesson plan. If a student needs assistive technology or a SPED teacher requests for
technology usage for some students, this can always be incorporated. iPads can be used for EL students if a translator is
needed.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
This lesson allows students to think of themselves as young adults and ultimately helps them to picture themselves as active
parts of society along with allowing them to think of themselves as part of a greater and bigger community. Students will be
able to solve problems working in small groups, along with how to save and spend money in order to be successful in our
simulation.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
The summative assessment allows students to engage in reflecting on their learning. However, the idea of community is
ultimately the big idea for this lesson. Once the lesson is complete, and the opinion pieces are completed. I will create an
anchor chart with community writing in the center of it. This will stay up for the school year to allow students to write their
thoughts on the chart throughout the year or even examples of community that they have seen.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

To help meet the needs of all learners, the teacher can select groups themselves to ensure that students who will need extra
assistance are paired with students who will not do the project for them, but will assist them in completing tasks. For students
with language differences, there should be multiple means of communication given when explaining the topic along with
allowing that student to use an iPad for a translator when needed.
