Supporting Development in Math & Science

Objective
To gain a deeper understanding of activities and materials used to
develop math and science skills and concepts in the classroom.
This task has three parts: A lesson observation, a cross-curriculum
mind map, a resource list.
You will need to choose to base your tasks on either a Math or a
Science lesson and classroom.
Science/Math Observation Task (part A)
Observe a Science or Math lesson, write a summary of the lesson and
evaluate it using the following questions as a guide.
Reflect
All things that we study at college about how to teach the
math or science lesson is the same way that I observe at
school. I see that the teacher was concentrated on 5Es. She
was singing the important information for the student such as
the plant parts and the plant needs. Also, she always loves to
compare between things and most of her lesson depend on the
tangible things and feelings like cultivated the plants. In
addition, she loves to use a presentation in her lesson and use
a simple act to confirm the important information for students.
Moreover, she uses a different activity to receive the
information to the students such as a worksheet and a game.
At the last of the class, she makes an interview about the
lesson. It is important to follow these steps in every lesson
because it helps in the development level of the student and
the teacher makes sure that she did her duty to the fullest. I
think that this way makes students more accept and
understand the lesson. Sometime ask questions after the end
the lesson is important to confirm that students was
concentrated with teachers and to confirm that the information
was received correctly for the students. In contrast, sometimes
ask the question as a problem for students and teacher.
Because some students are not concentrated with their
teacher, so they cannot answer the teachers question. Also,
sometime the teacher can not re lesson again because she has
a set time to finish the curriculum.

Science/Math Observation Task (Part B)

Integrating the lessons
Does the teacher integrate Science and Math concepts and skills into
other lessons?
Studies show that integrating skills from one subject into other courses
helps students to gain a deeper understanding of these concepts and
skills.
Based on the concepts/skills that were being taught in this lesson,
develop a mind map outlining ideas for practicing/reinforcing these
concepts skills in other subject areas. Chart B: Mind map outlining
ideas for activities based around a science or math topic which
seek to build scientific/math skills and concepts across the
varied areas of the curriculum.
