Heilboner, says that the great power of

stereotypes affects the vison. A study
showed how a group of Columbia and
Barnard students were shown pictures of
girls, and were asked to identify by general
liking they were to judge what they saw
from appearance. Months later the same
students were shown the same picture of the
unidentified girls but this time they were
told to judge by racial appearance. Suddenly,
ones that were considered pretty or
intellectual didnt match their race.

On the other hand, there are people who

have no problem at all with stereotyping
another person. While most people claim to
know the reality of stereotyping and how it
affects people and their everyday lifestyles.
The question: How does stereotyping a
person, can lead to racism and prejudice,
still remains and seems to go unnoticed in
todays society.

responded, when asked whether or not Do

prejudice? I created a survey which I posted

online through Facebook. My survey
consisted of 10 questions, some multiple
choice and the rest open-ended. (See
appendix A for a view of the questions.)
My initial plan was to create this survey and
only ask people of older age. As I put the
survey up for responses, I made it available
for anyone who wanted to participate. The
purpose of this survey, was to gather
information on what people knew about
stereotype and how it impacts or affects
them. The survey was open for three days,
and overall I collected ten responses.

When asked the question Why do you

believe people stereotype, the majority of
the responses were due to lack of
knowledge. While, two responses believe
humor was the cause. What caught my eye
the most was when 62.5% participants
answered that they always hear stereotypes

bring awareness to society and the nation

Discussion
The results of this study show that
stereotyping does affect the environment
and people that are in it. Perhaps the most
important thing to take from this research, is
to understand that stereotyping can and does
lead to racism and prejudice. Stereotyping
isnt only an issue about judging someone

that stereotyping is real and harmful.

After looking at the results and the articles
Ive read, I realized that stereotyping is a
serious problem in America and other
countries, as well. Whether people
stereotype due to lack of knowledge, humor
or just to feel good about themselves it is not
right and needs to be stopped.

feel less of a person because they do not
