1. For someone working in your field, what are some of the fantasies versus the realities of
the job?-I thought it would be just playing with puppies and kitties all day but really it is
a ton of cleaning and paperwork.
2. What is your current education level? What continuing education and training are
required?-I have a bachelors degree, there is no continuing training for someone in my
field.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.-I
check and answer emails, manage some shelter activities, and train volunteers.
4. How secure are you in your current position?-Very secure, there are not many people that
can or will do my job.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?I make $45,000, typically its between 35-50k
6. What potential for growth is there in your field? Non-profit volunteer coordinators grow
with their cause, as more attention move to you, you may grow into a national
coordinator.
7. How long have you been working here?-2 years
8. Do you have any experience with training canines?-I have trained shelter dogs as well as
search and rescue dogs, so yes.
9. How do shelter dogs differ from other dogs?-Shelter dogs dont get much socialization,
many are abused or have behavioral problems.
10. Do you believe there are benefits to canine clicker training for shelter dogs?-yes, training
shelter dogs increases adoptability and mental stimulation is healthy for dogs.
