Organizing Needs & Strategies for Intervention Purposes


Complete the graphic organizer to match needs to strategies so your book character can be successful in
school.
1. Name the disability (1 point)
2. List strengths that YOUR character will have in the story. (2 points)
3. List a minimum of 6 different characteristics (2 in each category) for the disability your
character exhibits. (6 points)
4. Align each disability characteristic to two research-based strategies to overcome or
manage struggles directly related to the disability. (12 points) (+ 3 points for details)

a) Sticky note strategy have student keep a list of
work that needs to be completed for the day on either
one or multiple notes and they can either scratch off
the list or throw away a note for each completed
assignment
b) Choice boards give student the choice of different
assignments for the same subject material, allows the
student to do what they want to do hopefully
increasing the rate of completion

2 Short attention span

a) Response cards allows student to participate


without having to be vocal, increases desire to pay
attention and answer questions
b) Movement/music/rhythm have class stand up and
do movements or sing songs to learn material. This
will keep the student engaged.

1 Withdraws self from social interaction

a) Class-wide peer tutoring give the student a
partner which gives them the opportunity to converse
and to complete class assignments in a larger group

competing for points. Making it competitive will
increase their class engagement.
b) Group learning assign student to a group where
they and everyone else is given a role. This gives the
student an opportunity to lead while also interacting
with other students socially and academically.
2 Difficulty maintaining personal relationship with
peers

a) Drama strategies allow student to act out


theatrically to express and communicate emotions
b) Peer assisted learning (PALs) assign the student a
PAL in the classroom. This will give the student one
person they can work with year round to improve
their social skills as well as a better understanding of
class material.

Behavior / Organization
1 Aggression

a) Behavior specific praise praise student when they


keep their hands to themselves or handle any
frustrations in a nonaggressive way.
b) Behavior contract create a daily behavior contract
for the student that will record his behavior, for each
day they respond to frustrating situations in a nonaggressive way, give them a star. If the student gets all
stars for the week, they get their reward.

2 Anxiety

a) Journaling allow student to write journal entries


when they are feeling anxious or worried during the
day describing what is causing them to feel that way
b) Art/Illustration strategies allow student to be
creative with assignments. This will allow them a more
creative outlet and increase their positivity in the
classroom.
