LESSON ELABORATION, EXTENSION, AND MODIFICATION
Elaboration: Help students understand better by having them use their fingers to take
one away each time a dog leaves. Give them a cup where they can place the dogs that
leave in. This way they can see how many are gone opposed to how many they have left.
Then we can help them make the connection that those amounts added together are the
same as ten.
Extension: Students can create their own word problems about the dogs leaving. They
can have more than one dog leave at a time or start with more dogs for a greater
challenge. They have to figure out how many dogs are left each time a group of dogs
leave.
Modifications: I will have the song printed out on sheets with large font for everyone to
see, preferential seating, hand-over-hand if necessary, dog manipulatives, base-ten
pyramid sheet to place manipulatives on, positive specific praise.
ASSESSMENT
Students will be individually tested on counting and being able to subtract one on a one
on one testing basis throughout the week.
