Lesson: Money
Standards:
N.FL.03.08 Use mental strategies to fluently add and subtract two-digit numbers.
M.PS.03.11 Add and subtract money in dollars and cents.
Objective/Benchmark: The learners will recognize coin values and add different values together.
I can recognize different coin amounts and add the amounts together.
Anticipatory Set: I will begin the lesson by displaying different coins on the document camera and asking
the students what each coins value is.
Input:
A. Task Analysis
Display coins on document camera
Ask what each coins value is
Move coins around to create different change values
Ask students to tell me the amount of change displayed
Demonstrate how the coins are added together to create the amount
Explain the rules to the Matching Game
Divide students into groups
Pass out Matching Game
Allow them to play the game
When groups have finished, collect the game cards
Pass out I have, Who has.. cards
Review coin amounts
Have students read through the I have, Who has sequence twice
B. Thinking Levels
Comprehension: Describe the different coin values displayed on document camera
Application: Demonstrate understanding by discussing change amounts as whole group
Analysis: Differentiate between change amounts and coins used to make amounts while
participating in the Matching Game
C. Accommodations
Remediation: The students who have difficulty playing the Matching Game, will be
assisted by their peers or myself. They will also be allowed to use a paper and pencil to
add the amounts together. If they have trouble reading the I have, Who has cards, I
will provide assistance.
Extensions: The students who complete the game early will be given play money to quiz
each other with coin amounts.
Learning Styles:
i. Interpersonal: Cooperative learning through group game playing
ii. Kinesthetic: Movement of cards while playing the game
iii. Mathematical/Logical: Manipulate coins to determine amounts
D. Managing the Lesson
Instructional Methods:
i. Discuss coin values
ii. Discuss change amounts when coins are combined

iii. Group participation in Matching Game

Engagement Strategies:
i. Active Student Participation: The students will be participating during the
discussion of coin values, change amounts, and playing the game with a small
group.
ii. Classroom Management Focus: The students will raise their hands before asking
or answering questions. I will be drawing Popsicle sticks with their names on
them to keep all students participating. Students who blurt out will be reminded
to remain quiet. If the behavior continues, they will be given a STOP sign on
their desk. If they still continue, they will be given a behavior form, but will not
be asked to fill it out until the fourth reminder.
Materials:
i. Document camera
ii. Coins
iii. Paper
iv. Coin Matching Game
v. I have, Who has cards
vi. Pencils

Modeling: I will model for the students by giving them examples of change amounts and demonstrating
how to combine the values together. I will also model how the Matching Game and I have, Who has
games are played.
Check for Understanding: While the students are playing the Money Match game, I will walk around the
room and observe them. If students are struggling, I will assist them.
Guided Practice: I will demonstrate how the games are played before gradually releasing the
responsibility onto the students.
Independent Practice: There will be no assignment given.
Closure: I will review coin values a last time and a few coin combinations. I will hand out I have, who
has? cards while the students are working with partners. The cards will require them to count how much
change they have on their card as well as pay attention to what the others are saying. The first student
reads their amount and says, I have 50 cents, who has 75 cents? The second student reads their card, I
have 75 cents, who has 85 cents? and so on. When the last card is read, I will challenge the students to
go through the cards again, but at a faster pace. After the second reading, I will collect the cards and
prepare the students for their next lesson.
Assessment: I will formatively assess the students while they are participating in the activities.
