Algebra 1 - Section 7.

1 Lesson Plan
Title: Solving Systems by Graphing
Objective: Students will be able to solve a system of linear equations by graphing.
This means that they can graph two linear functions and understand that the
intersection of these lines is the solution to the system. They will understand what
it means if two lines never intersect, and if they are the same line.
Standards:

ccss.math.practice.mp1: Make sense of problem and persevere in solving

them.
ccss.math.practice.mp2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
ccss.math.practice.mp4: Model with mathematics.

Materials: Students Pen/pencil, graph paper, and ruler

Teacher Power point, and smartboard
Assessments:

next day HW quiz

student participation and engagement
scale of 1-5 assessment periodically throughout the lesson (teacher ask
students to rate their understanding on a scale of 1-5 using their fingers)

Procedure:
7:307:35: Daily check-in with students.
7:35-7:40: Start off with a warm-up reminding students how to graph linear
functions.
7:40-7:55: Introduce system of equations, and give examples of how and when
they could use a system in the real-world.
7:55-8:10: Teacher will do an example with the students, then let students work on
a 3 examples with their table partner.
8:10-8:20: Teacher will go over the different types of scenarios that students may
see (one solution, no solution, and infinitely many solutions).
8:20-8:25: Students will take a 5 minute break to stretch their legs.
8:25-8:40: Teacher will talk through a real-world example and work with the
students on solving it.
8:40-8:55: Students will have 15 minutes to work on their homework assignment
for the night.
8:55-9:00: Teacher will wrap up the lesson by asking two exit questions and gauge
what the students understanding is.

Differentiation: During classwork time, teacher will walk around and help out
students who may be struggling more to help them get a better understanding.
They will also get a copy of the notes if needed. Higher level learners will be asked
to help lower level learners during classwork time, and be given a different set of
HW problems to challenge them.
Reflection: The warm-up was a good way to introduce what we were going to do,
and a good refresher for the students as to how to graph linear functions. Students
did a great job on understanding what it meant to have a solution and how we
found that solution by graphing.
Some were having a tough time with
understanding what it meant to have no solution or infinitely many solutions, but
about 80% of the students were able to grasp the concept as a whole. They are
ready for section 7.2.
