Procedure:
The students will be creating a compare and contrast diagram to help them understand the
difference between characters and genres. For this assignment students will be read a book out
loud, and as the book is being read, they are to write down the name of the characters as best as
they can and write down the theme of the book they think it is. After the book is read the students
will be give a handout of the different definitions of genres. As well as the different roles that
characters could be. They will go online and create a venn-diagram comparing and contrasting
the two books. This matches almost all of the standards listed above, especially communication
and critical thinking. Link: http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/
venn_diagrams/

Instructional Strategies:
Create a compare and contrast diagram of two different characters as well as two different story
genres using bright colors. Students will be able to get the idea of what they will be creating.
This strategy goes along with the standard of modeling digital age work and learning.

Diverse Learners:
Strategies for meeting the needs of all learners including gifted students and students with
disabilities can be found at www.cast.org, as well as additional strategies and resources based on
the Universal Design for Learning Principles. For students that may work faster than others and
get done in a short amount of time will be able to go over to the reading area and pick another
genre of book to read.

!
Homework:
This entire assignment will be done inside of the classroom, but I will send home different work
sheets on knowing different genres of books and how to distinguish the different roles of the
characters.

Vocabulary List:
Students will be able to practice their vocabulary words for the week by taking home
word searches, as well as being able to go onto https://quizlet.com/134831950/
vocabulary-words-flash-cards/?new to help them understand the meaning of the words.
Mom or dad can also help out with this.

Formative Assessment:
Students will be split up into 4 different groups and we will play a game that I put together
online so that I can see what they know before I go over the material and give them and actual
test. This will be done on this link: https://b.socrative.com/teacher/#space-race and the room
password is EISIHTW1

Summative Assessment: This follows with the NETS-S standards as well as

NETS-T.
The students will have a quiz at the end of the week over their vocabulary words, as well as
naming a genre when given a scenario in a book. This quiz will be done by the students using the
school computers and going onto a google form that is made by me. The quiz will be graded and
will also give the students feedback to help explain the answers if they got a few wrong.

Interactive Activities: These activities really focus on the NETS-S standards.

-Online Bulletin board and sticky notes: Students can log onto my online bulletin board to
help them review different topics that were covered. http://linoit.com/users/hiserk/canvases/

-Online create books: I will have my students work in a group with others to create their own
personalized story. They will have a specific genre as well as giving the characters different
roles. They can do this by going online and working together to make an interesting story to
share to the class. Link: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/studentinteractives/stapleless-book-30010.html

-Animoto: I will let the students do a fun activity in groups at the end of the day to make their
own video with pictures and voiceover of what they learned in class for the day. I will also be
able to put this on my website for the parents to see what they are learning as well. Link: https://

-Nearpod: I will create a series of open ended questions about animals that my students will
answer. Since the lesson is reading two different books about stories with animals, it will be fun
to see what kind of responses I will get back from them. Link: https://app.nearpod.com/

Games:
There are many Web 2.0s for children to do online at home and inside of the classroom. They
provide plenty of educational games for students to do to help them understand a subject better.
Here is an example of a great English language arts game for second graders.
http://www.turtlediary.com/game/identify-the-part-of-speech.html

Differentiate/Remediate Formative Activities:

No single student learns the same way and at the same pace as another student. They all learn at
their own pace. Some students will be at a higher level than others and those students will still be
able to work to the extent of their knowledge without having to be held back by other students.
Students that are struggling and need extra time will have a chance to work with me one-on-one
as well as taking home some worksheets to practice on at home with mom and dad.

http://www.tlsbooks.com/secondgradeworksheets.htm this is a great website for all different

kinds of English and Language Arts worksheets that are free that even parents can print off at
home. For the higher end of students, I would also recommend using the above link but instead
of doing grade 2, have them try some grade 3 worksheets. I will also expect a little more
information and detail in the activities that we do in class, and will grade them a little harder.

Promote Digital Feedback:

I will also take the pictures of the different diagrams to post on my website for parents to see at
home. I will also take pictures of my students working in groups and being collaborative with
others. It will make the students feel successful and smart, and that is very important to young
and eager learners. Also, it will make the parents proud of their kids for working so hard in the
classroom.
