1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
Fantasy-Every player is dedicated and works hard to be the best. Reality-Only 3 players actually do take lessons
and go play on their own.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
Masters Degree-Educational Leadership Coaching school and tennis clinics.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
I get to school at 6:30 am and at least 3 or 4 times a week I stay to 6:30 pm. I teach 4 English IV classes and 2
tennis classes. We have practice until 4:00 pm. During the day, I have to grade papers, create assignments, contact
parents, go to parent meetings, offer tutorials, bus duty and continually check emails, for forms to be completed
on students, surveys and progress reports. During the season we have 3 teams, so I might not make it back to
school until 7 or 8 at night. Then I have to wait for parents to pick their child uplongest wait time1:30 minutes.
We work weekends during the spring season.

Revised Fall 2013

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
As secure as anybody can be as a high school coach. Tennis will always be offered in high school.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
We have our teaching pay and coaching stipend. Teaching pay is how many years you have worked and coaching
stipend is between $5,000 and 7,500. We are the only sport that gets paid for 1 sport even though we coach two
different seasons.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
None. No recognition or bonus is given for being successful.
7. What is rewarding about your career?
Being with the best kids in school. Seeing the smile on my players faces when they win and being able to hug
them when they lose and telling them how proud I am of them for working so hard and giving their all for our
team.
8. How much would you recommend this career to another individual?
I would tell someone that to be a coach and a teacher is a calling. You cant expect to make money or not to have
long days. You have to do it because you want to make a difference not for the praise or glory.
I dont think most people looking for a career today would want this job. We are losing 3 head coaches in tennis
this year because they are worn out and tired of long days and low pay.
9. How much do you like this job versus dislike?
I love my job. I wouldnt work anywhere else. I dont have to work, I chose to.
10. Do you play tennis when you are not working?
Yes. I take lessons and am in two leagues.
