Part A: AUDIENCE AND OCCASION ANALYSIS:

Specific Purpose Statement: My audience will learn how to tie a bow tie.
Thesis Statement: Tying a bow tie is a useful and easy skill.
3 Main Points: Sizing the bow tie, tying the bow tie, tightening the bow tie.
Pattern Of Organization: Ive chosen the chronological pattern of organization because it will allow me to
explain the steps of tying a bow tie from start to finish.
Audience Analysis: Tying a bow tie is a neat novelty not many people know. While this will probably be
more useful for men, there are certain occupations for women (such as high end catering) that require
black bow ties.
Occasion Analysis: I expect there to be a good diversity of topics from my fellow class mates. Mine
might stand out, but if kicking a corner shot in soccer is appropriate, this should be appropriate.
Part B: SPEECH OUTLINE:
Speech Title: How to Tie a Bow Tie
Introduction:
I started wearing bow ties at the beginning of the year. I got my first pair last Christmas. A lot of people
like hand tied bow ties when they see them. Theyre unique, and will definitely make you memorable. However, a
lot of people are turned away from actually getting one because of the prevailing myth that tying a bow tie is
difficult. If you can tie a shoelace, you can tie a bow tie, and Ill show you how. I show you how to get the bow tie
to the right size, how to tie it, and then how to tighten it and make the knot perfect.
Transition: The first step is getting your bow tie to the right size.
Body:
I. First major point: Bow tie size
A. bow tie thickness
1. Adam Schoenberg and Cory Rosenberg, co-founders and co-CEOs of hook+ALBERT
(hookandalbert.com) say, Thinner/Smaller skinny lapels, Larger/Thicker thick (Donahue, W.)
B. most bow ties can be resized.
1. Ill demonstrate with my own bow tie
Transition: Now that the bow tie is the right size you can tie it.
II. Second major point: Tie the bow tie (All instructions Interweave Crochet plus my own input)
A. Lay the bow tie across your neck and let the ends dangle over your chest, with one end an inch
or so longer than the right.
B. Cross the longer end over the right and bring it up. Rest the longer end on your shoulder.
C. Bring the shorter end up to your neck and form it into a bow shape.
D. Drape the longer end in front.
E. Fold the longer end into a bow shape and push it through the hole you made.
Transition: Now all thats left is to tighten it up and add some finishing touches.
III. Third major point: Tighten the bow tie

A. Adjust to your needs. Alternate pulling the folds and ends.

B. Designer Alexander Olch says, "It may not look perfect, but that's precisely the point; all you
need to do is form the knot, and then you're able to adjust it per your tastes. (Smith, R. A.)
C. Paul Kelley, a regional manager for Paul Stuart (paulstuart.com) says, Don't be afraid to create
a very tight knot as that allows each of the bows to have deeper dimples (Donahue, W.)
Conclusion: Now you can resize a bow tie, tie it, and tighten it. And now that you know how easy it is, I hope you
wont be tempted to ever wear a pre-tied or clip-on bow tie, when you can show off your self-tied bow tie.
