WILLIAM FLOYD SCHOOL DISTRICT

SUMMER 2016 DRIVER EDUCATION INFORMATION

Application Procedures
Due to limited availability, a maximum of 32 students will be selected for summer 2016 Driver Education on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Application will be available to print online on the William Floyd School Districts
website. Interested students who are at least 16 years of age and have a valid NYS learners permit may apply at
District Office. Registration will be Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 from 2:15pm to 4:00pm in District Office.
Please note: The deadline for all applications and payment ($380.00 cash, check or money order) is Wednesday,
June 8th @ 4pm; NO applications will be accepted after that date and time. Students will be notified at the time
of registration of their lecture and drive times and it will also be posted of the Drivers Education bulletin board
outside District Office. Once assigned to a day and time for class, it cannot be changed.
All registered students MUST attend a mandatory after-school informational and enrollment meeting on June 9th
at 2:15pm in Room 137. At the meeting, the Driver Education Coordinator will review policies, procedures, and
expectations with all selected students. Students who are registered and do not attend this meeting will forfeit
their space, and that space will be given to a student on the waiting list.
Procedures, Expectations and Attendance Requirements
In order to be issued a New York MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion certificate, New York State law
requires you to have 6 hours of actual driving, 18 hours of in-car observation and 24 hours of class lecture.
Students are scheduled for exactly the number of hours required by NYS. Absences are only permissible when
they involve extenuating circumstances, and those absences require documentation. These will be considered
and/or approved on a case-by-case basis, and any absence that is authorized must be made up. Students and
parents/guardians are advised that family vacations, jobs, or participation on a sports team are not considered to
be justifiable reasons for absence, and students must arrange with the teacher to make up the missed class. In cases
where a student misses an in-car session, it is the students responsibility to switch with another student if he/she
cannot attend. If missing sessions are not made up, the MV-285 cannot be issued. Students enrolled in Driver
Education are expected to be in good standing with respect to attendance and behavior for the duration of the
course.
