SUBCATEGORY.

Competency: L-1, Pediatric Nursing

Subcategory: L-1-2, Demonstrate knowledge of stages of growth and
development of pediatric client.
When it comes to the stages of growth and development, I believe
the most influential experience I have obtained thus far was from
lecture in Nursing Foundations 2005 where the instructor discussed

what growth and development is and different theories on growth

and development including but not limiting to, Ericksons theory,
Kolbergs theory, and Piagets theory. Then really went into detail
on the mental and physical changes that occur throughout
adolescence. I now feel confident in this skill. By asking a few
simple questions I am now able to determine what stage of
development a person is in and I can identify characteristics of
growth and development.

WAS
MEANINGFUL.

I learned that growth refers to physical changes while development

refers to ability to complete tasks. This is important because a
child who is 8 could look like they are 14 and might be capable of
reproduction at this age but still might have the mentality of an
eight year old so talking about safe sex methods could be difficult
but it something the nurse should discuss with the parents to try to
prevent adolescent pregnancy, which is an at risk group for

pregnancy complications. I also learned that there are eight stages
to Ericksons Theory beginning at infancy ending at demise.
Piagets theory includes 4 stages and starts from infancy and ends
at adolescents. Kolbergs theory has three levels each with two
stages starting from toddler and ending at adolescents. Ericksons
theory examines how children interact with others using issues that
must be solved to further development. Erickson believed that
society and the people around us help to shape who we are. This is
important to understand because it explains why children from
abusive families typically act differently from those of nurturing
families and the importance of affection in child development.
Piaget explains how children think and learn. This is important in
nursing because it will help when it comes to discharge teaching so
the nurse can better relate to the child and help them to understand
their condition and what will be expected of them to aid in
recovery. Kolberg explains how children develop their sense of
right from wrong. This is important to understand in nursing
because right and wrong will also have to be reinforced in the
hospital to ensure the childs safety. Important mental changes to
remember are the development of morals, self esteem, abstract
thinking, and understanding of universal principals. Important
developmental changes are learning to crawl, speak, and play ect.
Growth and development both play an important role in making us

who we are and in nursing it is our job to make sure we try to make
every stage a positive one.

I would rate my proficiency in the competency of pediatric nursing

care as good because I understand the stages of growth and
development and why it is important to understand in the nursing
practice. To achieve this competency I went to class and listened to
the instructor while following along with the PowerPoint. Overall, I
met this skill well and met the expectations and requirements of the
competency.
In my nursing career as a student and a professional I will use this skill
to assist in proper teaching and communication with adolescents.
Using this skill over the years to come will aid in better overall health
of the clients emotionally, and physically. By understanding the
stages of a childs growth and development I will be able to provide
more personalize care for the child and help them to understand what
it happening as well. The child being aware of what is occurring with
their health is just as important as the guardian understanding.
