arm-bands with their learned knowledge of Chinas history and
culture.
2. Social Studies: Students will understand the cultural and
historical significance of the dance and tradition.

you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to apply their knowledge of the Chinese tradition to create Chinese dragon masks.
2. Social Studies: The students will be able to state the historical significance of the tradition in terms of colors and dance

Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion ,please be

very specific, walk me through step by step of the What of what is
happening with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):

1. Students will locate China on a map to understand where

in the world we are working.
2. Read aloud about traditional Chinese culture/dragon dance
to give students some background knowledge and historical
significance of the different traditions
3. Watch a video of the dance to give students an idea of
what they will be learning and striving for their dance to look
like
4. Learn steps to the dance periodically over days while
different parts of the mask/costume dry to help them get
more in touch with the culture and traditions.
5. Learn significance of the colors and design of the dance
repeatedly throughout the lesson from the original
book/website. This will help students keep the overall
learning goal in mind.
6. Design mask colors before they apply them to make sure
they have reasoning behind all their decisions
7. Color mask on printed paper
8. Glue outside decoration on paper plates by choosing from
the different options based on personal taste (streamers,
crinkled paper, etc.)
9. Cut out masks and clue on pre-cut paper plates to overlap
the glued parts of the outside decoration.
10. Hole punch and tie on elastic to allow students to wear it
as a mask
11. Measure and staple 3 arm bands per arm to give the
edges of the eventual dragon some costuming as well
12.Attach decorations to each arm band using streamers that
flow as they walk and move to look most like the traditional
dance.
13. Create a written document as a class that explains what

they have been learning to email to the other classrooms that

will be watching in the hall. This will help the students to
conceptualize what they have learned and the audience to be
more involved.
14. Perform dance in the halls to share their learning with the
school.
15. Students will write a personal rationale to explain their
individual creative choices in terms of historical significance
to display with the masks in the hall after the performance is
complete to check for individual understanding.
Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:
I will play a video of the dance to get the students attention
and interest.

learned):

Students will write an explanation for their color and design

choice in terms of the historical significance.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
Students will have to know how to color/cut/paste to construct the masks.
Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning

How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?

Students will have to make creative choices based in historical reasoning. They will be provided many materials and
options from which to make these decisions. There is a great deal of creative choice that goes into the creation of
these masks and the dance that students may use as an opportunity to overlap their personal choices and likes with
a historical and cultural significance.

How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
They will take notes continuously on their reasoning and connection to the history as they go to help them routinely reflect
and to help them with their final write up.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

Students will be shown the example multiple times, and each step will be modeled directly before they are expected to do it to
help English language learners and students with disabilities. The nature of the lesson is cross-cultural, integrating new, and
for some students possibly familiar, cultures into the classroom. That connection to another culture opens more access to the
information by nature.
