Essential Question: Why are so many war vets neglected and mistreated when they come home
from war?
Working Thesis: When soldiers come home from their military careers, they are often times left
mistreated and neglected because they do not receive health coverage, and they are left untreated,
or mistreated in the V.A.s.
Refined Thesis: When vets and soldiers return home from military tours and training, many are
often left mistreated and neglected because they do not receive health coverage, and they are
being left either untreated or mistreated in veteran hospitals.

Woolhandler, S., and S. M. Wolfe. "America's Neglected Veterans" National Center for
Biotechnology Information. U.S. National Library of Medicine. Web. 17 Feb. 2016
In the Article Americans Neglected Veterans, the issue of the mistreatment of war
veterans was discussed and argued using evidence based research done by the US National
Library of Medicine. This article provided me with substantial information that I will use in my
paper. The information that I find particularly useful for backing up my argument was written in
a paragraph where the authors discussed the exact number of how many war vets were currently
living without any kind of health coverage. By using this information in my paper, I will be able
to use accurate data to show how many hundreds of thousands of vets go neglected every year.

"VA Delayed Treatment Lawsuit | Delay in Treatment Lawsuit." The Oliver Law Group
Wwwlegalactionnowcom. Web. 18 Feb. 2016.
The news article VA Delayed Treatment Lawsuit, has shed light on many horrifying
cases in which war veterans suffered from neglect and mistreatment while at VA hospitals. This
document gives the dirty facts that VA hospitals tried to erase and hide from the public for years.
This article gives me important and factual information that proves that thousands of war vets
died due to neglect in VA hospitals. This resource also proves that many of the war vets who
were in the hospital received improper care. There are now thousands of malpractice law suits
against the VAs and that is why I am choosing to use this source. Our war vets are simply not
receiving the treatment and care that they need and deserve.
Byers, Ann. Working with Veterans and Military Families through Service Learning. New York:
Rosen Group, 2015. Print.
The book Working with Veterans and Military Families gives multiple accounts of the
struggles that soldiers face when they return home after war. In this book, there are multiple
helpful paragraphs that will support my argument that war vets are not given the treatment that
they need and deserve. In particular, this book accounts for a soldier who returned home from
war with server wounds and scars and was not given any treatment for them because there is not
enough staff to care for all the vets who are emitted into VA hospitals. This book also discusses
why so many war vets come home and find themselves homeless. There are many cases in which
war vets find that they cannot pay for their medical bills, and they become bankrupt. This source
will give me an exuberant amount of information that will support the arguments that I will be
making in my thesis paper. This information is reliable and up to date, which will give me
credibility as a writer.
