Bridgewater College Teacher Education Program

Secondary Lesson Plan Format

Course:
Geometry

Unit:
Angle Measurements

Lesson Title:
Tape Triangles

Virginia SOL/National
Standard:
G.6

Measurable Lesson Objective(s):

The students will be able to solve for angle measures and apply triangle properties
Materials/Technologies/Resources Needed:
5 roles of painters tape, iPads, various sizes and types of triangle cut-outs
Opening: Warmup on Socrative
Accessing Prior Knowledge: They will have to know the theorems from earlier in
complete and use their knowledge of solving equations
Teacher will:
Students will:
Prepare 4 questions on socrative and
Return to their desks with iPads and
sign out iPads when students come in
start working on the questions. They
the classroom
should write any needed work on a
scrap piece of paper.

Anticipated
Time:
5 mins

Learning Activity 1: Investigate Isosceles, right, and equilateral triangles

Teacher will:
Pass around different sized triangles,
some isosceles, right, and equilateral.
Instruct them to fold at the midpoints
and bisect angles one at a time. If
sides overlap exactly, they will see
congruence of sides/angles. After this
we will formalize the information by
talking notes.

Learning Activity 2:
Students construct triangles
Teacher will:
I will split the class into groups and
have a hat full of different triangles
names. The slip of paper will describe
the type of triangle they need to make
a large scale of on the walls. I will
check the properties they write down
about the triangles then distribute
tape.

Students will:
Fold papers in a variety of ways, try to
conclude some of the properties
associated with each type. They will
offer their conclusions to the class
and for the notes. Then they will copy
down the notes.

Anticipated
Time:

Students will:
Write down all the properties they
need to account for, which I will check
before they make the large scale.
They will then go to the hallway and
make large triangles on the walls, and
label each part. They will include
variables.

Anticipated
Time:

20mins

30 min

Learning Activity 3: Solve classmates triangles

Teacher will:
Make sure the triangles meet
specifications.

Students will:
Move as group to different triangles
and solve them

Anticipated
Time:
20 mins

[copy/paste additional Learning Activity sections as needed]

Concluding Class Activity: go over what the triangles they made
Teacher will:
Guide discussion about the created
triangles

Students will:
Each group will explain to the class
how to solve each triangle,
mentioning the name classification
and important theorems needed to
solve them. Students that are not
presenting will check their answers.

Anticipated
Time:
15 min

Homework Assignment:
Activity If Extra Time Remains or Technology Fails:
Lesson Quick check
Teacher will:
Students will:
If there is extra time we will race
Shout out the definitions
through the definitions of what we
learned that day.

Anticipated
Time:
3mins

If technology fails I will write the notes

and warmup questions on the board.
Accommodations for Students with Special Needs such as ELL, SPED, Gifted:
