Lesson topic: Mathematics

Date: 12/6/15

Discipline: Measurement and

Geometry

Year Level(s): 5/6

Strand(s): Location and

Transformation

Duration of Lesson: 60 mins

Substrand(s): Describe translations, reflections and rotations of two-dimensional shapes.

Identify line and rotational symmetries (ACMMG114) (grd 5)

Part of Content Description:

They describe transformations of two-dimensional shapes and identify line and rotational symmetry
(grd 5)

Part of Standard(s) and Learning Outcome(s):

Students will be able to identify and explain rotational and reflectional symmetry
in natural and manmade objects.

Assessment:
Success Criteria
Students are able to identify the line of reflective symmetry in objects
Students are able to identify if objects have rotational symmetry

Opportunities to Provide Feedback:

Students will share their work with their table at the conclusion of the lesson

Background to the learning:

Teacher (teacher resources to inform your content knowledge)

Have previously looked up and revised the definitions of rotational and

reflectional symmetry

Pupil (identify pupils background and current knowledge)

Students should have an understanding of the mirror line within shapes

Lesson Resources:

Collection of manmade and natural objects for students to explore

Content of Lesson:
Introduction:
min

Show a picture of a square and give students 1 min to write as many things as
they can think of about that square. Give students the opportunity to share their
ideas, and write them up on the white board

Development:
mins

10

Once symmetry is mentioned, ask someone to look up the definition of symmetry

in the maths dictionary.
Can someone please explain to me what symmetry is?
Discuss the different types of symmetry and how they relate to the square and
other shapes
What kind of symmetry does this shape have? Rotational? Reflection?
Both?
What other manmade objects have symmetry?
Are there some objects in nature that have symmetry?
Which type of symmetry do they have?
Is nature perfectly symmetrical?
Introduce the face app
Consolidation and Practice:
mins

30

Students are given 10 mins to find variety of objects (from both outside and
within the classroom) to categorise into shapes that have reflectional symmetry,
rotational symmetry, neither or both
One person from each table takes a photo of this arrangement and sends it to
myself to display during closure time
Once this is complete, they will be given the fossil worksheet to complete at their
desks to practice their reflectional symmetry
Extension Activities
Students will use the app Symmetry Lab to design shapes with both reflectional
and rotational symmetry
Closure:

15 mins

Display on the projector the different groups tables of reflectional and rotational
symmetry. The group explains what theyve done and why theyve put them in
those particular places. They prove to the class that they are correct
