Reiman Gardens is a splendid view that welcomes people entering Iowa State
University and Ames from south. Located next to Jack Trice stadium it is spread over 17
acres of land. Reiman Gardens is one of the major university botanical garden in Iowa
and is counted among top university Gardens in United States. Reiman Gardens is the
part of the horticulture tradition of Iowa State University, It was built in the early 1990s.It
was possible because of Roy Reiman, An Iowa State alumni who graduated in 1957. Roy
Reiaman is the man who made this beautiful garden possible.
Reiman Gardens mission is To educate, enchant, and inspire an appreciation of
plants, butterflies, and the beauty of the natural world. It tries to work on it by
organizing events and activities through which they educate those who come to these
events. And also there are educational tours.
As a part of Iowa State University campus, Reiman Gardens staff tries to
participate in events and collaborates with a wide range of Iowa State university
departments such as Liberal Arts and Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. It holds
lectures, educational workshops and others features include offering a living laboratory to
Iowa states students. There is always some kind of event going on at Reiman Gardens
giving Amess people chance to learn and have fun with nature.

Regardless of the season there is always something to admire Reiman Gardens.

The number of visitors at Reiman Gardens surprised me as I was expecting less due to the
snowy weather at this time of the year. I had planned to go out but one of the volunteer
worker at the garden told me that it would be useless as all the paths are covered in snow
and there isnt much greenery left. Taking his advice I stayed inside and instead decided
to spend my valuable time in Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing. Christina Reiman
Butterfly Wing isnt huge but it is a world for more than 800 butterflies in that place.
Upon entering the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing, I was greeted with instructions to
walk carefully as butterflies might be sitting on the path and to also remember to take a
look at my back in mirror when exiting Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing to make sure no
butterfly is going home with me. People of every age were there, some observing
moment of silence sitting in the corner meditations bench others taking picture of
beautiful butterflies. There was so much to see in that small place. Praises could be heard
from every corner of Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing.
A family with two kids entered the butterfly wing. There was no limit to the fun
the young girl was having whereas the boy was trying to hide his hands and face in his tshirt. It wasnt his fault; a pair of Mosaic was attacking him. Here is another one. said
the father pointing towards the beautiful Antheraea polyphemus sitting on the branch of
the newly planted tree in Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing. Even the butterfly couldnt
resist from sitting on Jabuticaba, tree with grapes on its trunk. Next time I happen to go
there I would look for the interesting lady who, I have heard works as a volunteer just to
see and learn new things everyday. She said, I come here to see them play. Yes the
butterflies play and it is amazing to see them following each others tail in order to catch

each other. The joy could be seen on her face when she told me that every year summer
she waits for the UPS package to arrive with butterflies in them.
There are over 74 species of butterflies at Reiman Gardens. Reiman Gardens is
committed in protecting, promoting and conserving the native Midwestern butterfly
species. Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing is a small world full of colorful butterflies.
What could be more breathtaking than watching a butterfly coming out of a womb?
Besides the butterflies Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing also has very interesting trees
and plants that are host for butterflies. There is always something to learn at Reiman
Gardens you wont be disappointed if you visit. In fact I am planning my next visit
already.
