Visualiser
The lesson objective:
To enable the children to observe and draw with accuracy

Aim:
For the children to draw an object with accurate perspective and shading to create a
3D representation

How the Visualiser was used:

The Visualiser was used to demonstrate to a group of 30 children the idea of 3D
views, light and shade that they could observe and discuss how to create the effects
with pencil.
The children were shown a clay gargoyle from the top and then, by rotating the arm of
the Visualiser the camera captured the image from the front.
The class discussed the differences in view and perspective. To highlight the light and
shade the light was moved.
To help the children get started, using Image Mate for Presentation and the capture
tool in Smart Notebook, the image enlarged with the zoom tool and half the image
was captured.
The teacher then brought the image up on the interactive whiteboard through Smart
Notebook and modelled how to complete the gargoyle by drawing the ‘missing half’,
showing pencil techniques to create the required effects.
The half picture was then printed off, one for each child, who could practise their
skills as demonstrated by the teacher, before attempting their own observational
drawings from real gargoyle models.

The benefits of the Visualiser:

• Clear exemplification of 3D light and shading, shared and discussed by ythe

whole class

• Modelling on the interactive whiteboard using the real image

• Providing worksheets for all the children to practise skills
