First Aid

First Aid
- An assessment and intervention of the first aider, bystander or the patient with
minimal or no medical equipment available.
- An immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly takes ill. It
includes self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available.
Rules and Responsibilities
1. Bridge the gap between the victim and physician.
2. Ensure safety of him/herself and that of bystanders.
3. Gain access to the victim.
4. Determine any threats to patients life.
5. Summon more advance medical care as needed.
6. Provide needed care of the patient.
7. Assist more advance personnel.
8. Record all findings and care given to the patient.
Objective of First Aid
1. To alleviate suffering
2. To prevent added/further injury or danger
3. To prolong life.
Characteristic of a Good First Aider
1. Should not cause pain. (GENTLE)
2. Should make the best use of things @ hand. (RESOURCEFUL)
3. Should notice all signs. (OBSERVANT)
4. Should not alarm the victim. (TACTFUL)
5. Should be comforting. (EMPATHETIC)
6. Should maintain a professional and caring attitude. (RESPECTFUL)
Hindrances in Giving First Aid
1. Unfavorable surroundings
2. The presence of crowds.
3. Pressure from friends or relatives.
Transmission of Diseases
1. Direct Transmission Occurs when a person touches an infected persons body
fluids.
2. Indirect Transmission Occurs when a person touches objects that have been
contaminated by the blood or another body fluid of an infected person.
3. Airborne Transmission Occurs when a person inhales infected droplets that
have become airborne as an infected person coughs or sneezes.
4. Vector Transmission Occurs when an animal such as a dog or insects transmit a
pathogen into the body through a bite.
