Iwillusenotecardstoaskaroundtheclasswhattheythink.Notethatinthelastclass,we
coveredthatTheLordoftheFliesisthesowheadthatrepresentsallinherentevilineveryone.

Discussion
IplanonstartingadifferentiatedlessonplaninwhichIasktheclassiftheylikecharacter
analysis,plotandthemeanalysis,orareinterestedinhistory.Hopefullythiswillbreakupthe
studentsevenly.Iwilltrytoapplytoallstudentsdesiresandneedsforwhattheyfeel
comfortablewithpresenting,butIwillalsokeepinmindthatgroupsshouldbemoderatelyeven
soeachstudentbothhasachancetoparticipateandbeactiveintheirgroup,andeachstudent
hasachancetounderstandthematerialiftheyhaveaweakspotofunderstandingwhiletheir
peerhasastrongspotofunderstandingthesametheory/plotline.

groupresearchingAdolfHitler.

ForthegroupresearchingAdolfHitler,Iwillpassoutanarticle(attachedinemail)thathasmy
underliningsandanyannotationsthatIhave.1Thisarticlewillalsogoouttoeveryoneelse,butI
willtellthemtodisregardituntilwereachthepresentation.

Iwillhandoutapacketthathaseachgroupandthequestionseachgrouphasonit.Students
willworkonthequestionsandIwilltellthemthattheyaregoingtopresentonthematerial.Iwill
giveabout15minutesorsoforstudentstodothis(thisisflexible).Iwillgoaroundandaskwhat
eachgrouphassoIknowiftheyareontherighttrack.Iftheyarent,Iwillaskmyquestionsina
moredetailedwaytogettothepointofwhatImlookingfor.

Presentations
Eachgroupwillgoupandpresenttheirfindings,whilestudentsintheaudiencebothparticipate
andaskquestions.Studentsintheaudiencewillalsotakenotesontheirpacketstowhatthe
presentinggroupfound.Iwillbehelpingstudentspresent,asthisisntaformal,graded
presentation,butratherawaytogetstudentsmoreinvolvedinclass.Iwillhelpfacilitateand
presentdeeperquestionstotheclass,iftheresadeeperpointthegroupistryingtogetat.But,
Iwillalsogivethepresenterstimetoalsofindtheirvoice.

Thepresentationswillgoinorderofthegroups,sowestartfromthestandardpresentationof
plotpointsandanalysisofplottothemes,andthenmoveintocharacterization,finallymoving
ontohistoricalcontext.

Afterallfourgroupshavepresented,Iwillfacilitatethelastpageoftheworksheetwhichis
connecting.Dependingontime,Iwilleitherhavestudentsdoathink,pair,shareoneach
question,andthendiscussasaclass,orIwilldoaquiet10secondsthinkingtooneself,before
callingonvolunteersandthencoldcallingforopinions.Coldcallingshouldbeappropriatehere,
astheseareabitopinionbased,andstudentshavebeenengagedinthepresentations.

Assessment
Studentswillbeassessedontheirpresentations,showingthattheyunderstoodwhattheywere
presenting,alongwiththefactthatstudentswillbeassessedbythisexitticket:

1) GiveoneconnectionbetweenAdolfHitlersruleandJacksrule
2) DoyouthinkGoldingpurposelydrewaconnectionbetweenhistoryandfiction?
3) Didyoufindwhatyouspecificallypresentedoninteresting?Didithelpyouunderstand
otherspresentationsbetter?

Studentswillhandintheexittickets.

Iwouldliketonotethatthisarticlehasmyannotationsandunderliningsfor,whileitisadecentlyeasy
articletoreadfor9thgraders,itwouldtakemuchtoolongforstudentstocompletelycomprehendit,soI
underlinewhereIwantthemtoreadsotheycanunderstandandextracttheirownideasfromit.
