Lesson Plan College of Saint Benedict/Saint Johns University

Title of Lesson: This Is Me Number Stories

Grade Level: 4th grade
Process Standard(s): Algebra
NCTM or Minnesota Academic
Standards:
4.2.2.1 - Understand how to interpret
number sentences involving
multiplication, division and
unknowns. Use real-world situations
involving multiplication or division to
represent number sentences.

Objectives:
What will the students know or
be able to do?
1. Students will be able to create
number stories including
multiplication, division,
addition, and subtraction to
represent numbers about
themselves.

Rationale:
It is important for students to not only practice their multiplication, division,
addition and subtraction, but also be able to write number stories. In life,
there are many times where we have to use these number stories to help us
in situations.
Materials/Preparation Needed:
o Large posters for each student
o Markers
List and define:
1. discipline specific language:
Number stories: a multiplication, division, addition and subtraction equation
with an answer at the end (in our activity, the answer is behind the sticky
notes).
2. academic language:

Anticipatory Set:
5 minutes
Students will start by reviewing and practicing their multiplication, division,
addition and subtraction problems. I will have flash cards for each table
group. The groups can spread out around the room, take their time on each
problem, and use their resources to practice these problems.
Procedure:
10 minutes
After the game, I will start with a big, blank poster (the size pictured below)
on the board titled This Is Me. I will call on a random student to tell me
their birthday. With this day, I will have the student give me a short number
story (using 2 numbers) using multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
or exponents (for advanced students). For example, if a students birthday is

June 24, I will write this on the white board then have students find a number
story such as 4 x 6 or 48 / 2.
20 25 minutes
After we create a whole poster as a class, students will be given smaller
posters for themselves. They will use the examples we created as a class as
a reference. I will also give them sticky notes so the answers can go behind
the sticky notes. This way students can share and practice their equations
without the answers available for them to see.
When the students are done with their equations, they will draw a picture of
themselves in the middle! This incorporates art and creativity in the math
lesson.

Assessment of Learning:
I will assess students on their final poster with their this is me facts and the
numbers that go along with it. I am looking for students to complete 10 facts
and number stories. I am looking for students to have a number stories on a
sticky not, but also the correct answer to the number story (also, correct to
their fact) under the sticky note.
Closure:
10 minutes
Students will share their posters with their table groups. This will allow each
student in the class to work on number stories while looking over their group
mates work.
Assignment:
N/A

Accommodations:
1. How will you support students who struggle academically?
Students who struggle academically will be able to get help from their
classmates or me. Although my objective states that students should use
addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, I will only expect students
to use at least one problem of each category.
2. How challenge advanced students?
I will challenge advanced students by allowing them to challenge themselves

by using exponents in addition to the other categories.

3. How will you provide for different learning styles?
I will lead by example, let the students help me choose the answers and
problems and students will work with their groups to get help or share ideas.
Students will work individually, with the whole class and in their small
groups.

Rubric
1: Developing
Students will be
able to create
number stories
including addition to
represent numbers
about themselves.

1. A student can
create a problem
such as 20 + 2 =
22 but cannot
create,
understand or
write a problem
such as 24 4 =
20.

2: Beginning
Students will be
able to create
number stories
including addition
and subtraction to
represent numbers
about themselves.

1. A student can
create a problem
such as 20 + 2 =
22, but cannot
create, understand
or write problem
such as 24 / 6 = 4.

3: Proficient
Students will be
able to create
number stories
including
multiplication,
division, addition,
subtraction to
represent numbers
about themselves.
1. A student is
proficient in their
addition,
subtraction,
multiplication and
division stories and
most likely uses a
variety of these
options.

4: Exceeds
Students will be
able to create
number stories
including
multiplication,
division, addition,
subtraction and
exponents and
exponents to
represent numbers
about themselves.
1. A student is
proficient in their
addition,
subtraction,
multiplication and
division so they are
able to use their
exponent skills on
their poster as well.
