MATH 1210
PIPELINE PROJECT
Dear MR. CEO,
After analyzing your request, we are planning the most effective way economically for the pipeline route.
Here in my report Ill explain step by step.
a) Determine the cost of running the pipeline strictly on BLM ground with two different cases:
I.
One Running west, south and then east to the refinery.
BLM Ground: 480,00/mi
West: 8 mi
South: 16 mi
East: 40 mi
(west + south + east)(BLM Ground) = total
(64 miles)($480,000/mile) = $30,720,000
II.
One heading east through the mountain and then south to the refinery.
Mountain cost: $4,500,000
Study: $600,000
8 months: $800,000
((east - west) + south)(BLM Ground) + (mountain cost + study + 8Months) = total
(48 miles)($480,000/mile) + ($4,500,000 + $600,000 + $800,000) = $28,940,000
b) Determine the cost of running the pipeline:
I.
The shortest distance across the private ground to the refinery.
Private ground: $360,000
2

a +b =c

Distance:

(private ground + BLM ground) (distance) = total

($360,000 + $480,000) (16

: 16

) = $30,052,753.62

II.

Straight south across the private ground, then straight east to the refinery.
(private ground + BLM ground) + ((east west)(BLM ground)) = total
($360,000 + $480,000) + ( (40 - 8) ( $480,000) ) = $28,800,000
c) Determine the cost function for the pipeline for the configuration involving running from
the well across the private ground at some angle and intersecting the BLM ground to the
south and then running east to the refinery. Use this function to find the optimal way to run
the pipeline to minimize cost. Determine the length of pipe that runs across private land and
how far from the refinery it starts running on BLM land. Determine the angle at which

your optimal path leaves the well. Clearly show all work including drawing the pipeline on
the figure below. Make it very clear how you use your knowledge of calculus to dermine the
optimal placement of the pipeline.

d) Include a computer generated graph of the optimal cost function,

C(x), for this pipeline for any
configuration involving crossing some
private ground as well as some BLM ground. Make sure to use the correct
domain of the function to scale your axes appropriately and to label the
minimum point.

Reflection
There are many things that I learned in my calculus class. I learned how to
determine limits analytically, interpret limits geometrically, deduce limts from the
Squeze Theorem and findind indeterminate limi forms using lHopitals rule. Also I
learned how to spot if a function is continues or not. In addition I learned how to find
the derivatives and antiderivatives of functions using different methods. Finally I
learned about indefinite and definit integrals. I think that a good example of using
the lessons I learned is this Pipeline Project.
In my opinion the lesson that is going to be useful in my future is that now I know
how to find the derivativeof a function, this is going to be useful for the reason that
Im planning to create a website that finds derivative of functions .
