1. Read through the writing sample to get a sense of your classmates
style, purpose, main idea, and supporting points. What is your first
reaction to the writing sample?
The style and purpose are clear. Information is clear and presented in a
tranquil manner, not in-your-face persuasive.
2. Read the essay again, this time for strengths and weaknesses. List
three of each.
Strengths: Catches attention from the beginning. Every step in the
essay takes to you to a new example. The compassion is apparent.
Weaknesses: No weaknesses. I liked that you shared a personal
statement in the beginning of your last essay, maybe add a similar
example in the opening.
3. Note the title. Does it capture your attention? It is descriptive? Or
routine?
Title is still intriguing as the content is sensitive in nature.

4. Review the introduction. Does it


a. Capture your attention? Content is interesting.
b. Motivate you to continue reading? I would like to see more
information on Shaming.
c. Indicate the writers purpose?
Purpose is awareness and informative.
5. Locate the thesis (main idea) of the writing sample and indicate it here.
a. Is the thesis clear? Thesis is clear and highlighted for importance.

6. What are the main points that support the thesis? Summarize them
here.
a. Are the main points organized in the most logical order?
Yes, results are shared on the effects of shaming.
b. If rearrangement is necessary, make suggestions.

a. Is there enough development? Yes
b. What kinds of evidence is provided (e.g., examples, expert
testimony, statistics)? Examples and consequences of shaming are
provided.

informed and take that information with them to change themselves
or maybe to help others.
b. Is it thoughtful rather than perfunctory and routine? Yes, well
thought out.

a. Are sentences carefully constructed (no fragments, run-ons, etc.)?
