Area of Concern

Needs Assessment

Scroggins
Elementary is an
inner-city campus in
Houston ISD. Every
campus in the district
is supposed to have
an Intervention
Assistance Team (IAT)
in charge of
monitoring students
academic
interventions, their
documentation, and
if needed, referral for
services to address
students specific
needs. This process
is not happening in
my school and the
IAT is inexistent.

As teacher specialist
with several
administrative roles, I
understand that
nowadays teachers
have many
paperwork-related
duties. I took the
initiative to form a
proper IAT and train
its members. Only a
handful of teachers
on campus knew
what to do to
complete the
documentation
process and they
were going straight
to the diagnostician if
they thought the
student needed to be
referred to special
education. They were
not aware of other
services available to
students through
Section 504.

Evaluation
Pre-AssessmentThere was not an
organized Response
to Intervention
/Intervention
Assistance Team.
Teachers who wanted
to refer student for
evaluation went
straight to the
diagnostician. Most
would not even take
time to begin
documenting the
interventions
because of how
lengthy is the
process.
Final evaluation
After a full semester
of implementation,
the IAT is having
periodic meetings
and making
recommendations for
students in
intervention. This
year a very
successful ratio of
referral
/identification. There

Reflection
1. As leaders in a
school
community, we
must provide
children with the
best possible
education.
Teachers must
meet the needs
of every single
opportunity in
their classrooms.
2. Teachers must be
childrens
educational
advocates and do
what is in their
power to grant
them an equal
chance for
learning. It is not
acceptable that
the length of the
IAT process
deprive students
from the services
they need.
3. I know that
teachers at my
school can work
