Friends,

Thank you for taking this opportunity to look deeper into who we are as a
church. I believe that the deeper you look into Grand Parkway the more you
will find us to be a simple church that is motivated by consequential truth. The
people who make up this church are authentic, Godward and welcoming to
everyone, so relax and be yourself!

This class is designed to expose you to our beliefs, values and church structure,
as well as the various ministries of Grand Parkway. Our desire is to inform, not
overwhelm, so be sure to make a note of any questions you may have as this
is a great time to ask. My prayer is that you walk away with a realistic view of
where we are, a clear understanding of where we are going and a desire to join
us on the journey!

I look forward to the privilege of being your pastor should God so lead!

Blessings,
Neil McClendon, Lead Pastor

The Purpose
OF STARTING POINT
1. What We Believe
2. What is at Our Core
3. What Holds Us Together
4. What to Expect - Membership
5. The Next Step
6. Where You Can Serve

What We Believe
STATEMENT OF BELIEF
THE WORD OF GOD
We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without
error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
(Mark 13:31; John 8:31; 20:31, 32; Acts 20:32; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20, 21).

THE TRINITY
We believe that there is one living and true God eternally existing in three
persons who are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute
distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and
redemption. (Genesis 1:1, 26; Matthew 28:19; John 1:1, 3; 4:24; Romans 1:19,
20).

GOD THE FATHER

We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit who is perfect in
holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He infallibly foreknows all
that shall come to pass, that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of
men, that He hears and answers prayer and that He saves from sin and death
all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. (Matthew 23:9; Luke 10:21, 22;
John 3:16; 6:27; Romans 1:7; 1 Timothy 1:1, 2; 2:5-6; 1 Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:6).

JESUS CHRIST
We believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only begotten Son who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles
and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily
resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people
and personal visible return to earth. (Matthew 1:18-25; 20:28; Luke 1:2638; John 1:1; 20-28, 30, 31; Acts 1:11; Romans 5:6-8; 6:9, 10; 8:1-4; 9:5; 2
Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 7:25; 9:28; 1 Peter
2:21-23).

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to
convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment, and to regenerate,
sanctify and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the
Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding
helper, teacher and guide. (John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26, 27; 16:9-14; Romans 8:9;
1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; Galatians 5:22-26).

REGENERATION
We believe that man was created by God in His own image, that he sinned
and thereby incurred physical, spiritual and eternal death which is separation
from God, and that as a consequence all human beings are born with a
sinful nature, are sinners by choice, and are therefore under condemnation.
We believe that those who are regenerated by the Holy Spirit will repent,
forsake sin, trust Jesus Christ as Savior, become new creatures, are delivered
from condemnation and receive eternal life. (Genesis 1:26; 2:17; 3:19; 5:2;
Ecclesiastes 2:11; Psalm 51:7; Proverbs 28:13; John 1:13; 3:14, 16; 5:24, 30; 7:13;
8:12; 10:26; Romans 3:19; 5:19; 8:1; 9:22; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 2 Thessalonians 1:9;
James 1:14; 1 John 1:9; Revelation 19:3, 20; 20:10, 14, 15; 21:18).

THE CHURCH
We believe in the universal Church, a living and spiritual body of which
Christ is the head, and all regenerated persons are members. We believe
in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ,
baptized on a credible profession of faith and associated for worship, work
and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local
church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world.
(Ephesians 2:19-22; 5:19-21; Acts 1:8; 2:42; Hebrews 10:23-25).

CHRISTIAN CONDUCT
We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and the wellbeing of his fellow men, that his conduct should be blameless before the
world, that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions and that he
should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in
Christ. (John 14:15, 23, 24; Romans 12:1-3; 1 Corinthians 4:2; 10:31;
2 Corinthians 9:6-9; Colossians 1:9, 10; Hebrews 12:1,2; 1 John 2:3-6).

LAST THINGS
We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to
earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection
of the body, the final judgment, the eternal joy of the righteous and the
endless suffering of the wicked. (Matthew 16:27; Mark 14:62; John 14:3; Acts
1:11; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 15; Philippians 3:20; 1 Thessalonians 4:15;
2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; 2 Timothy 4:1; Titus 2:13; Revelation 20:4-6, 11-15).

THE GOSPEL
We believe that once we experience the people of God, the love of God
and the truth of God, our appetite is awakened by the Spirit of God to
begin a personal relationship with God. This appetite expresses itself in
various ways but will only be satisfied in a personal relationship with God.
Therefore, it becomes necessary that we understand what it means to be a
Christian. Simply stated, a person is ready to explore Christianity when they
move from knowing there is a God to wanting to know the God who is. The
following are some basic beliefs that inform our understanding:

MAN IS BROKEN, SINFUL AND UNABLE TO FIX HIMSELF

As much as this may sound like bad news, its actually great news. Accepting
and embracing the truth of who we are is the first step towards embracing
the truth of who God is and what He has done. We believe that because of
our sin we are separated from God and desperately in need of restoration.
The Bible talks about this in Romans 3:23, 6:23; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8, 9.

GOD PAID FOR OUR SIN ON THE CROSS

Mans efforts to fix himself through good works, accomplishments or church
attendance is what we call religion. What God accomplished on the cross
has made possible a relationship. When Jesus died on the cross, the full and
final payment of our sins was made, and now a relationship with God is not
only possible but is also available. This sacrificial payment was Gods idea,
not ours; therefore, more than an unexplainable glitch in the cosmos, the
Cross is another expression of Gods plan for our lives. The Bible talks about
this in 2 Corinthians 5:21; Isaiah 53:10; Romans 3:21-26.

EACH PERSON MUST INDIVIDUALLY ACCEPT GODS FREE OFFER

OF A REDEEMING RELATIONSHIP
What that means is that our parents, grandma, boyfriend, girlfriend, boss,
husband, wife or best friend cannot do this for us. By acknowledging
our sinfulness, accepting Christs death on the cross as payment for us,
and opening our hearts, we are saying to God, You are at work in me,
regeneration has made repentance possible; therefore, I repent. Because
our merciful God has slathered mercy on our lives, we are drawn to the place
of wanting to know Him personally. This, we believe, is the starting point of
a relationship with God that is often referred to as conversion. People who
have done this are referred to in the Bible as Christians, and the historic life
they now live is called Christianity. The Bible talks about this in Romans 10:9,
10; Acts 16:22-34; 2 Corinthians 5:17-19.

WITH RELATIONSHIP COMES RESPONSIBILITY

Every relationship involves responsibility. Mother and child, husband
and wife or boss and employee; each of these relationships comes with
responsibility. The relationship between God and man is no exception.
However, this responsibility is not intended to be a burden as much as an
invitation. God, who initiates relationships, is glorified when we respond to
his invitation with obedience. The first responsibility for a new Christian is
that of water baptism.

BAPTISM AND THE LORDS SUPPER (COMMUNION)

Jesus gave the church two visible symbols that we call ordinances. These
are Baptism and The Lords Supper (communion). They serve as symbols
that represent great spiritual truths for believers. If you have questions about
baptism, you are welcome to attend the next Baptism Conversation Class.

BAPTISM
1. Baptism should only happen after conversion.
2. Baptism symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Christ and
identifies the person being baptized as having undergone the same process.
3. Baptism is an act of obedience. The Bible talks about this in Matthew 3:13-

17; 28:18-20; Acts 2:36-38; 8:26-38.

THE LORDS SUPPER (COMMUNION)

Jesus never said when and how often believers should observe The Lords
Supper. It appears the observance is more important than when or how
often it occurs. Therefore, we are free to observe this ordinance when it is
most appropriate and effective for our church family. Our plan is to observe
The Lords Supper at least quarterly. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Mark 14:22-26,
I Corinthians 11:27-29)

What is at Our Core

CORE VALUES
GOSPEL
By Gospel we mean the good news made available to us in the life, death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. What makes this good news is that God
accomplished on the cross everything necessary to rescue us from what
we deserve. This reality makes change possible for us, but it also makes
relationship available to us. We believe the Gospel is how we are converted
as well as the means by which we continue in the faith. As flawed yet
forgiven people, our desire is to subject everything in our lives to the
truths of the Gospel. We believe this produces winsome, liberated, satisfied
worshipers who love Christ and culture. Our desire is that in all things Christ
would be preeminent, and we believe that the Gospel is the means by which
this is accomplished.

COMMUNITY
We are all created in the image of a God who, in his nature, is community.
The Biblical expression of God is the Trinity - the Father, the Son and the
Spirit. The fact that God is a community of persons who live to love and
give to one another speaks to the undying need for us to connect not
only with God but also with others. Jesus knew this and even prayed for
this on the last night of his life (John 17:20-23). Therefore, community is
not just something that we do as a tack-on at the end of the day or at
lunch (although thats part of it). Instead, community is something that we
intentionally pursue as something that is of the utmost importance.

MISSION
Being on mission is to be intentional. To act and react to those around us
with purpose is at the heart of mission. Because our world view is shaped
by the lens of Scripture, we understand the mission field to be our backyard,
the soccer field where our kids play and our neighbors driveway just as
much as it is India, Costa Rica and Romania. At the core of our mission is
Jesus charge to make disciples of all nations. Therefore, we engage the

culture with redemption, not just relief, in mind. Participation in what God
is doing in the world is something each of us has been empowered and
equipped to do. Whether we pray, send or go, each of us plays a part in
Gods story of mission.

BLESSING
When God set his affection on his people, he rooted this relationship
in blessing. His words to Abraham were, I will bless you, and you will
be a blessing. Through you all the nations of the world will be blessed.
Because God has faithfully demonstrated this reality in our lives, we are
now empowered with the privilege of being to others what God has been
to us. Whether through our efforts to alleviate poverty, practice Spiritled generosity or engage in international assistance, we take seriously
the Biblical mandate to be who the Bible says we are. All of these efforts
are fueled by our desire to help others see God for who He really is and
themselves for who they can be.

What Holds Us Together

STRUCTURE

JESUS, THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH

The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church. There are many
verses that demonstrate this truth, but perhaps none capture this reality as
well as Colossians 1:15-18. As the head of the Church, Jesus set the tone for
what it looks like to be a leader in that even the Son of Man came not to be
served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

ELDERS

Neil McClendon

Rick Branek

Paul Keith

Butch Ewing

Mike Rice

David Mertins

We believe that the elder structure is the Biblical model of church

governance and leadership. Our elder body functions as a body and not
a board with three main responsibilities: shepherding, governance and
accountability (1 Peter 5:2). The elders are expected to model servantleadership in a manner which empowers our various ministries to fulfill
their Biblical responsibility.

STAFF
These gifted men and women are gifts God has given the local church for
the purpose of equipping the saints for the work of ministry (Acts 13:2,3;
Ephesians 4:11-14). Each staff member leads a specific ministry and is
responsible for the leadership, development and involvement therein. These
individuals are also responsible for the day-to-day operations of the church.

DEACONS
Deacons are men and women who serve our church by organizing service
teams that help coordinate the details of practical ministry. Some examples
of deacon-led teams are the Ordinance Team, Event Set-Up Team and First
Impressions Team. Our deacons are simply servants and do not function
with any authority. We believe the Bible includes both men and women in
the role of deacon.

LEADERS
Lay leaders are church members who lead various aspects of ministry on
a volunteer basis. Their strategic investment of their spiritual gifts help our
church mature into who the Bible says we can be. Everything that gets
accomplished at Grand Parkway has as its bloodline invested, competent,
and equipped laypeople leading the way.

CONGREGATION
The congregation is the people who make up our church through their
consistent attendance and investment of spiritual gifts and resources.

THE WORLD
The world is made up of people who were made to worship Jesus but just
dont know it yet. We believe that we were created by God to impact the
world in which we live by intentionally blessing those with whom we live
with tangible expressions of Gods love. In doing so the kingdom of God
will come near to Sugar Land, the United States and to the end of the earth
(Acts 1:8; Ephesians 2:10).

What to Expect
MEMBERSHIP

Every journey has a starting point and begins where you are. Some move
faster than others, but we all begin somewhere. Christianity and church
are no different. We believe that God reveals Himself and the Truth to us
in various ways and at different speeds. Because of this we dont use guilt,
manipulation or pressure to try to make people do things they arent ready
to do. As you consider becoming part of the DNA of Grand Parkway, it is our
desire to make the pathway to membership as simple as possible. As you
consider membership, we invite you to be as authentic as possible, think
deeply about what God is calling you to do and pray diligently for wisdom
on your decision.

EXPECTATIONS
Often we are asked by people, What does Grand Parkway expect from
me if I become a member? For those who are ready to become a member
at Grand Parkway, we expect three things. This is easily remembered as
Worship + 2.

WORSHIP
A worship service on Sunday is an easy entry-point into the DNA of our
church and can be a main place where you are fed the Word of God, enjoy
fellowship, and worship through song, sermon and giving. This is the first
level of expectation for all who want to become members.

1. GET INVOLVED & REMAIN COMMITTED TO A SPIRITUAL

FORMATION GROUP
There are several ways to get involved with a Spiritual Formation group
at Grand Parkway: Bible Studies on Sunday mornings, Midweek Studies
throughout the week during the spring and fall semesters, and Community
Groups which meet in homes all over the city throughout the month. Our
desire is to see you grow into a deeper relationship with Jesus, while in
community with others. Pick at least one area of formation in which youll
become involved and enjoy.

ENVIRONMENTS OF SPIRITUAL FORMATION:

BIBLE STUDIES
On Sunday mornings a variety of come as you are small
group Bible studiesare available at 10:00AM. Thereis a
place for you in one of these interactive environmentswhere
we study theBible together in community.

MIDWEEK STUDIES
On Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings throughout
the spring and fall semesters, we offer more in-depth and
topical Bible studiesthat are focused around smaller groups.
This is where we learn the deep doctrines of the faith along
withsome practicalhandles on how to apply these truths to
our lives.

COMMUNITY GROUPS
During the first and third weeks of the month, small groups
meet in homes throughout the city. These groups are
designed to grow and build relationships, as well as pray and
serve together while discussing sermons and applying them
to daily life. This is where friendships are started, nurtured
and pursued.

2. INVEST IN AN AREA AND VOLUNTEER

Your church needs you to join a team and serve. It takes hundreds of
volunteers to make ministry happen at Grand Parkway. You could be a
greeter in the lobby, a leader for Kids At The Park Childrens Ministry, help
influence students in The Bridge or The Upper Room, be a part of our
Medical Team, etc. You are not volunteering for life, so dont be afraid to
jump in and help out. You can get a feel for a particular ministry and if its
not a fit, there is no shame or guilt in trying another ministry. We want you
on the team, so jump in!

BECOME
When you become part of the membership here at Grand Parkway, we
know that youll not just read about who we are becoming as a people
but experience it in a very real and transformative way. When you do we
hope youll experience some, if not all, of the following commitments that
members of Grand Parkway make to God and each other:

MEMBERSHIP COVENANT
Having been drawn by grace and led to a place of change, having accepted
Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, having given ourselves fully
to Him and having been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit as an expression of obedience and identification, we joyfully
make this covenant together:
We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit and strive for Grand
Parkway to be a gathering of believers, speaking words of life and love to
one another, and as needed, we will speak the truth in love.
We will gather together as Christ compels us always remembering to pray
individually and corporately not only for ourselves but also for the world for
which Christ died.
We will commit to raise each generation in the ways of Christ. We will
nurture, mentor, love and lead while praying that our words and our lives
would lead others to the freedom found only in Christ. When its time to
rejoice and be glad, we will throw a great party. When its time to mourn

and comfort, we will weep with those who weep and bear one anothers
burdens.
We will seek by the grace of God to live as strangers in this world, denying
ourselves each day, knowing that our profession of faith demands that we
live our lives in light of the cross and the freedom it has given our lives.
We will work together in ministry as we preach the Word without apology,
as we worship in Spirit and in Truth, and as we live our lives according to the
Word of God. Motivated by the glory of God and the spread of the Gospel of
Christ in this world we will involve ourselves, engage our gifts and give our
resources to support the vision and ministry of this church.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of
the Holy Spirit be with us all.
Amen.

The Next Step

We know that each of you here is at a different place. For some, you are
here checking things out to understand more of what this place is all about.
For others, you have seen and heard enough and just want to know how to
get started.
For those of you just checking things out, there is no pressure to do
anything, We want people to take as much time as they need to make up
their mind if they want to be a part of our church. When you decide, fill out
the card and drop it in one of the brown boxes in the Worship Center at
your convenience.
However, for those of you who have already reached that point and decided
this is going to be your church, we are asking three things of you. First, we
want you to join Grand Parkway. Second, we want you to join a group (Bible
Study, Community Group or Midweek Study). Third, we want you to find a
place to serve by joining a team.

You were handed a card with your Starting Point Booklet.

Please check the appropriate boxes:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Grand Parkway a Southern Baptist Church?
Yes. We are a member of the San Felipe Baptist Association, which is part of the
Southern Baptists of Texas Convention.
How often do you celebrate Communion? Do I have to be a member to participate
in Communion?
Communion is celebrated quarterly. We practice open communion, meaning you do
not need to be a church member to partake of the elements. But you need to be a
follower of Jesus Christ.
If I am a member at another church, do you transfer my membership or letter to
Grand Parkway?
If you are a member of another church, there is no need to have them transfer your
membership to Grand Parkway. You should contact your former church letting them
know you are now a member here.
I received Christ as Lord and Savior quite some time ago but have never been
baptized. Do I need to be baptized in order to join Grand Parkway?
The next step in your faith journey would be baptism, and we would like to help you
get that settled. You do not need to get baptized to be a member at Grand Parkway.
Is membership required for serving within the church?
We require membership for all leadership positions and many volunteer positions
(e.g. Ark at the Park, Kids at the Park, Students, Worship, Teaching, etc.). However,
there are certain exceptions (e.g. greeters, ushers, hospitality, set-up/tear-down,
etc.).
Why is there not an invitation at the end of each service?
The end of the service is designed for people to approach the Elders and Staff
without any pressure. If there is an opportunity to talk to someone about all that it
means to follow Christ, we will gladly take the time necessary to talk with them.
How do I give my offering? Why not pass the offering plate/basket?
You can give your tithes and offerings by placing them in the tall wood boxes
located by each exit. We do not take a offering in the worship service to allow
everyone to give as they have been led without pressure.
If Im still exploring the person and work of Jesus, can I become a member?
Were excited youre with us! Church membership is specifically for those who follow
Jesus Christ. So, for now, well wait. Take your time to ask questions, get connected
in a Bible Study group and continue to explore the stunning claims of Jesus Christ. If
and when you decide to follow Christ, well revisit the membership topic.
What is the easiest way to get plugged in?
At Grand Parkway we want you to join a team where you can volunteer as well as
join a group like Bible Study, Community Group or Midweek. This allows you the
easiest path to get plugged in.
What ministries are currently looking for additional volunteers?
Presently all our teams have available space for you to join. Check out the
section Where You Can Serve in this booklet for all volunteer opportunities!
Does Grand Parkway have a Wednesday service/prayer meeting/Bible Study?
At Grand Parkway we refer to this as Midweek. We do not provide a service, but we
offer a couple of Bible Studies to choose from.
